About Carlos

I've had experience tutoring grade-school students about law, fellow college and high school cool peers about a variety of subjects including reading, writing, math, science, and history, and I've instructed youth basketball. I've a Bachelor's degree in Political Science with a minor in Psychology and earned a Juris Doctorate Law Degree. I love to learn and to teach, and I believe every student has the potential to master and effectively utilize whatever skill, technique, or idea they strive to learn. We are all capable of greatness in our own ways, and my goal is to help each individual achieve that greatness by playing to their strengths and shoring up their weaknesses. There is no such thing as a "poor" student--all it takes is care and persistence.

About the lesson

I take a very patient and flexible approach to teaching that endeavors to strike at the heart of the issue with tact and an attention to detail. I focus on utilizing the fundamental understanding of a given subject to find a path toward mastering and utilizing higher-level concepts in tandem with a student's preferred learning method. Repetition, consistency, simplicity, and patience are instrumental toward effective teaching. A typical lesson plan will consist of broad and brief overview of the subject, identifying the problem areas, constructing a proper approach to solving the problem areas and improving a student's strengths, and review of the taught subject matter to ensure retention and subject comprehension. I guide my students to the answer, letting them find and formulate the correct responses for themselves while avoiding handholding and also veering away from a simple "this is the answer, let us move on" type of instruction. As a tutor, my patience and ability to explain things simply and effectively set me apart, as well as my individual catering to each level of proficiency and experience that may need tutoring. The lessons I teach are primarily for undergraduate, high-school, and middle-school students needing help in the sciences, history, and math, with a specialized focus on English, reading and writing.
