About Alexander Thomas
Tom, 40, is a linguist at heart and divides his time between Rio de Janeiro and Devon, where he grew up, and is currently living just south of Exeter for the foreseeable future.
He completed a degree in Languages for Business: Spanish and French at Oxford Brookes in 2006 and after that decided to start learning Portuguese at his own pace.
He has been married to a Brazilian for a decade and has a daughter, which brought citizenship and serious roots in South America.
Tom has been a language tutor, translator and interpreter in various shapes and forms for the makority of his adult life and loves to teach others how to enjoy languages as a way to open doors to new worlds.
As a keen sailor he specialises in maritime portuguese for people who work at sea.
His main hobbies, apart from watersports, are skiing, cycling, gardening, cooking and everything to do with the great outdoors.

Just like the country and its people, learning the language is fun, versatile, colourful and diverse.
To study this flamboyant dialect you must enter the mindset, rhythm and passion of the locals which usually takes at least 5 minutes to warm up for.
Classes can be for those who want to travel and explore the vast territory, businesspeople who wish to feel more confident in meetings, oil & gas executives who are relocating to Brazil for multinational companies and others who are looking to learn for personal reasons, perhaps for an enhanced social life with Portuguese speakers living in the UK, maybe for romance!
Students have different interests and ambitions and no two classes are the same, but we concentrate on the four pillars of language learning: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing.
Materials are provided by the tutor and ultimately the student chooses what to study.
With an academic but relaxed atmosphere, Tom´s lessons will prepare you for your Brazilian adventure.
