About Jessica

Hi there! I'm Jessica - (杰西卡 Jiéxīkǎ)

Chinese is one of my biggest passions—I decided to take my first Chinese course at Stellenbosch University, and the rest was history. By the time I graduated, majoring in Chinese, I had been to China three times, participated in international language competitions, and reached HSK 5 (汉语水平考试五级).

At first, learning Chinese felt like an uphill battle, but by the end of my degree, I could write the infamous biáng biáng noodle character (58 strokes) from memory. Nowadays, I tutor English-first-language students learning Chinese, teach English to Chinese students, and challenge myself by learning the hardest traditional characters (繁体字 fántǐzì) just for fun!

One of my deepest passions is helping second language learners feel confident tackling something incredibly challenging, giving you the support to push yourself, and building skills that will benefit you exponentially—whether applying for jobs, making friends, or traveling to one of my favorite places in the world.

About the lesson

Are you a university student confused about tones, stroke order, or how to study Chinese without endless memorization? I know the struggle, and I can help you with practical, systematic support to have you reading Chinese without relying on Pinyin in no time.

I hold an HSK 5 (汉语水平考试五级) in Mandarin Chinese, and can help you tackle character lists, tone memorization, and Chinese listening tasks with confidence. Together we can strategize, break down your assigned syllabus, improve memory and Chinese-specific study habits, and get comfortable with confidently communicating that someone is your mother (妈妈 māma) and not your horse (马 mǎ).

Additionally, I love to talk about the latest Chinese animes, which province has the best hotpot, and exploring the rich history and culture behind one of the world's most challenging second languages to take in a non-Chinese speaking country.

We did the first class and she genually heard what I say and my dificulties - and I have a lot, however she lessened my fear and worry of being unable to leran Mandarin.
