About Shahana
I am a Hindustani classical vocalist of the Gwalior and Jaipur-Atrauli gharanas. I am a disciple of Shri. Mukul Kulkarni and Vidushi Sukhada Kane. My introduction into Indian classical music started in tabla from the age of 6, under the guidance of Pandit Yogesh Samsi. My initial training in tabla throughout my childhood has given me a love for tabla and a better understanding of laya and theka. In 2013, I began learning Hindustani classical vocal music under Shri. Mukul Kulkarni, a disciple of the late doyen of the Gwalior gharana, Pandit Sharad Sathe, and Pandit Arun Kashalkar (Agra-Gwalior gharanas). My training in khayal under his careful guidance is predominantly of the Gwalior-Agra gharanas. During my intensive taleem, Mukul ji has imparted many traditional khayals and authentic bandishes of the Gwalior gharana to me, including tarana, tappa, tapkhayal, as well as training in traditional Gwalior gayaki. Under Mukul ji’s guidance, I have developed an understanding of the importance of musical articulation, musical thought, and the use of theka in a vocal rendition.
I have also been receiving taleem for the past few years from my mother-in-law Vidushi Sukhada Kane, a disciple of Pandit Anandrao Limaye, Vidushi Kamal Tambe, and Pandit D.V. Kanebuwa. Under her guidance, I have developed finesse in my singing, as well as a more nuanced understanding of the traditional Jaipur-Atrauli gharana gayaki and its repertoire. I have also gained a wider perspective of the repertoires and gayakis of the Gwalior and Agra gharanas, as well as semi classical vocal music.
In addition to my training in Hindustani classical vocal music, I have also trained in vocal technique (from an anatomical perspective) and vocal pedagogy for over 4 years from Janice V Thompson, UK. This training has enabled me to be especially attentive to healthy and efficient voice production in myself and whilst teaching my students. It has also given me an understanding of how the voice changes through different stages of life and how to better manage one’s voice during these stages. Under the guidance of Janice Thompson as well as my gurus, I have developed a way to apply these techniques to Hindustani classical vocal music.

I have been teaching vocal music to a few keen students online and face-to-face for the past 9+ years. I teach with care and patience and I am especially keen to pass down what I have gained from my own taleem.
My approach to teaching:
I tailor my teaching to the needs of each individual student. I am very attentive to vocal technique and I work to improve this with my students. I will teach Hindustani classical raags, bandishes, and gayaki as I have learned through traditional teaching methods, as well as semi classical vocal music.
I teach Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced students. I teach students online, or in person if you are local.
