Hi there! My name's Michael and I've got a passion for helping people communicate comfortably. My goal is to help beginning and early-conversational learners feel confident in their Persian speaking skills.

If you're reading this, the great news is that you already speak a language! Meaning, that there are no new difficulties (grammatical, pronunciational, conceptual, etc.) that cannot be overcome. As a native English speaker, career linguist, and hobbyist polyglot, I am here to help you navigate all the difficulties of language learning!

BA Linguistics & Islamic Philosophy, Stony Brook University
•3.92 GPA/Summa Cum Laude
•Studied under Dr. William Chittick
•US State Department Critical Language Scholarship recipient
•Former resident of Tajikistan, and happy to help with Tajik dialects as well.

My favorite Persian-language authors include Hedayat Sadegh and Sohrab Sepehri.

About the lesson

Welcome to the world of Persian! Our itinerary is simple.

Any language starts with sounds, and to make sure that your Persian learning journey begins the same way as it does for native speakers, we'll do a deep dive into Persian phonetics! Alongside this there is of vocabulary to learn, and easy tricks to remember every new word we learn! The Persian writing system (which is not as scary as it seems) will be introduced.

Next, we will focus on memorization of phrases and conversational cues, begin to talk about grammatical concepts which exist in Persian, and comprehend how they differ from what we might expect as English-speakers.

We'll explore common life themes to get you comfortable speaking about the things you're most likely to. Being able to master a few topics will encourage you a ton, by showing you that language learning is simply a matter of covering ground and reviewing.

You'll soon see for yourself that you CAN converse with comfort when you give yourself patience, encouragement and practice! We'll continue to develop depth in a variety of common life genres of conversation, one by one.

Finally we will move to longer, more advanced texts and grammar to expose you to Persian in a variety circumstances and give you the opportunity to begin to مخلوط کردن (makh-LUT kardan - 'to mix') vocabulary from one theme of conversation into another. A creative speaker is born!

Along the way, we will use interactive media like films, music, poetry, cooking, and many more societal touchstones! I am so excited to meet you! (First TWO lessons are always free.)
