I am a Brazilian teacher with 10 years of international experience. I have published two books about language, with a new book coming out soon. My methodology is tailored to your level of fluency but generally focuses on improving listening, reading, and speaking skills. In our classes, we use a variety of didactic materials such as videos, texts, fill-in-the-blank exercises, cartoons, and more. The main goal is to help you experience Brazilian Portuguese culture and life beyond the boundaries of textbooks and apps. I have already helped dozens of students reach fluency, both here on Superprof and elsewhere. So, no matter who you are, your age, or where you're from – you can count on me anytime! :)

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

Yes, I am a native Brazilian and I have had contact with the Portuguese language since I was a child. In addition, I have traveled all over Brazil, getting to know its various cultures. That is why I always tell my students that my country is huge, being much more a plurality than a simple homogeneous region.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

In Brazil, we have several important names that well represent our culture. We have soccer players like Pelé and Neymar, great MPB singers like Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, great educators like Paulo Freire, and incredible novelists like Machado de Assis. These names go beyond the borders of Brazil, taking a bit of our reality to the world.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

Brazilian Portuguese is very flexible and complex, having been influenced by Portugal and also indigenous and African languages. The different regions adapt the language to their demands, which makes a simple trip to another state a big surprise and an incredible experience. I have traveled to every place in this country (north, south, east and west) and more and more I am surprised with the diversity of my country.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Portuguese, as any other language, is much more than just a form of communication, it is also part of us, of our identity. In this sense, I not only speak Portuguese, but I live this language, defining myself in the process.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

It depends a lot on the comparison. If we compare Portuguese with English, for example, the difference is big. Portuguese is a language of Latin origin, which means that all its words have gender, as well as variations depending on the subject used. If in English I can say "I like", "you like", "they like", in Portuguese, on the other hand, you have to adapt the verbs according to the subject: "Eu gosto, "Você gosta", "Eles gostam", and there are also variations according to the verb tenses (past, present and future). In my opinion, this is the most complex part of the language. After overcoming this barrier of the Latin languages (French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese), everything becomes easier.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I remember an interesting story told to me by a student. He told me that he had been to Brazil several times, but still felt isolated because he did not fully master the language. He felt ashamed of his accent and grammatical mistakes. And this is one of the obstacles in the study of Portuguese, or any other language, for that matter. It is necessary to overcome the fear of the other's judgement, to risk speaking and trying things out.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

As I said before, I have traveled all over Brazil. This means that I learned not only different accents, and alternative words, but also cultures that I never imagined would be in the country. Brazil is almost a continent as big as it is. To learn more and more of its cultures is a real privilege.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I have experience with several countries, such as Brazil, Portugal, the United States, and Argentina. These experiences helped me understand not only other cultures, but my own. I believe that I have the necessary conditions to help anyone to understand the Portuguese language in the best way possible.
