About Jenny

Hi, I'm Jen, born and raised in Nairobi ; the city where Swahili flows on every street corner, in every matatu, in every conversation between strangers who just became friends.

I didn't learn Swahili. I woke up already speaking it. It is the language of my city, my culture, my everyday life.

After years of watching foreigners struggle with apps and textbooks that teach technically correct but completely lifeless Swahili, I decided to do something about it. Real Swahili sounds nothing like what most people are taught. It has rhythm. It has warmth. It has personality. And the only way to really get it is to learn it from someone who has lived it their whole life. That is me.

I will teach you the Swahili that makes a Nairobi local stop and smile when they hear you. The kind you can use in a market, at work, on the street, in real life. I might even give you a taste of Sheng so you go from sounding like a tourist to sounding like you actually belong here.
Fair warning though — once you start speaking like a Nairobi local, there is no going back!

About the lesson

I always start by getting to know my student first. What do you already know? What's confusing you? What do you actually want to get out of this? Once I understand that, everything I teach is built around you specifically. Not a generic lesson plan.

How I Teach
For Swahili, we jump straight into conversation. I find that people learn fastest when they're actually using the language, so from lesson one we're practicing real phrases and real situations — how to greet someone, how to navigate a market, how to introduce yourself at work.

I'm a native speaker so I'll also teach you the natural rhythm of how Swahili actually sounds in Nairobi, not just the textbook version. I correct gently and encourage a lot .Learning a new language should feel exciting, not stressful.

Lesson Length
Usually an hour. For younger children we can do 45 minutes if that works better.

Swahili is my mother tongue — I was born and raised in Nairobi and have spoken it my whole life

Anyone who wants to learn. Travellers, expats, professionals moving to East Africa, people who just love the language. All levels are welcome.
