About Killarney

Hi! My name is Killarney, but you can call me Teacher Larn, Larn for short, or just Killarney. I live in beautiful South Africa! I am a TEFL-certified English teacher, with 168 hours at level 5 for teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL Academy UK). My accent is ordinary British. I have received both a British and American education as I am well-traveled. This includes me completing my junior high at the American School of Mogadishu, Somalia, my GCE O and A' levels with the University of London School Examining Board, and higher education with Benoni Technical College as well as the University of South Africa. I have formally taught students of all ages in private schools, colleges, and even in the corporate environment. I have worked in several industries professionally, including mining, recruitment, and advertising as an Administrator, Personal Assistant, and Marketing Consultant. I have interacted as a professional with other professionals on all levels. I thrive on helping others. My love for teaching has followed me into sports, the corporate world, and the world of the arts. I have achieved many prestigious awards professionally and personally as a sportswoman as well. I have studied and taught martial arts for over 20 years. I have participated in the 'World Senior Karate Championships' that were held here at Sun City, in South Africa, and the 'All Africa Shaolin Martial Arts Cup' held here as well. I have exhibited as an artist from a young age and my art was selected by the national gallery for the Heads of Commonwealth Exhibition officiated by Queen Elizabeth II. Always strive to be better at anything you do!

About the lesson

I am an interactive teacher that believes in helping my students to practice their English through interesting conversation and fun activities. I have over 10 years of teaching, coaching, and guiding people at all levels in English, Art, and Sport. I am able to pick up your weaknesses just by having a conversation with you and gently guiding you. We will pick topics that are of interest to you. If I know you better, your classes will be tailored to fit you and your needs. I have taught formally and informally. Therefore, I can correct grammar, phonics, etc. I CAN HELP you speak English naturally by using FORMAL and INFORMAL/COLLOQUIAL English to interact with native English speakers. For example, in formal English, we would say- 'I think I am going to retire for the evening' in a formal setting, like when you address your employer or business colleague. You can then say the same thing in 'colloquial' English by saying "I think I'm gonna hit the sack' to fit in with a crowd of native English-speaking friends and surprise them with your informal ability and knowledge as well. Both ways of speaking apply to different situations and environments, and it is very useful to know both. This will help you to fit in socially (with native English-speaking friends) and formally (with executives or colleagues). It is important to be well-equipped for any environment where you have to speak English naturally. I am able to teach you regardless of your professional, age, or social level as I have a background in lecturing and teaching both in the formal educational sector and informally as well. I have taught children, teenagers, and adults in colleges and schools. I don't judge and want you to feel 'at home' and relaxed in my classes. Also! If you would like to learn how to paint wonderful landscapes or draw still life or humans, we can do that and learn English while painting and drawing too! This is a physically interactive methodology by 'mimicry/copying' by having fun conversation in a relaxed and social setting. Join me and see!
