About Jake

I’m Jake — a qualified and experienced Biology teacher with over a decade of classroom and tutoring experience at GCSE and A level. I’ve taught in grammar, independent, and comprehensive schools, helping students of all abilities achieve and often exceed their target grades. My lessons are clear, structured, and supportive, blending strong subject knowledge with proven exam techniques. I focus on making complex ideas simple, building confidence, and equipping students with the tools they need to succeed in both OCR and AQA Biology. Whether you’re bridging the gap from GCSE, aiming for an A*, or preparing for university-level Biology, I’ll tailor your learning to help you reach your goals.

About the lesson

My breadth and depth of teaching experience has instilled into me the importance of tailoring teaching and learning to the needs of each individual. I start by understanding your goals, current attainment, and areas that need strengthening. From there, we create a personalised plan that focuses on building confidence, understanding, and strong exam technique to secure the marks needed to make the progress you desire. My lessons are interactive and application-based (instead of passive lecturing) and structured around bespoke exam-board style questions (following the style and structure of OCR and AQA with which I have experience writing for Secondary School assessment), with clear explanations, step-by-step reasoning, and incisive evaluation to identify and rectify strengths. As a qualified teacher with over 10 years of experience in sixth-form and independent schools, I bring a calm, supportive approach that helps students move beyond memorising facts to truly mastering Biology. Bonus for OCR A students: Book three or more sessions (including your free trial) and receive free access to my online course-aligned textbook and MCQ bank for Year 12 for the rest of the academic year :)

Jake has been my biology tutor for the past 3 months - he goes above and beyond, preparing extra materials when I have run out of practice questions and provides lots of feedback and detail in an insightful and clear way. We do online sessions as well as set tasks that I do independently and he marks for me with feedback. All of this is helping me raise my attainment to secure my Oxbridge chances.
