About Sophie

I am an A-level student hoping to undertake a Chemical Engineering degree at university. I believe I have the qualities that make me a comfortable and understandable tutor, especially since I have been tutoring for as long as I can remember under my mother’s (maths & science teacher) guidance. In my private time, I love writing, performing on stage and catching up with my favourite anime. I am passionate about STEM, and I believe that it is possible for every student to have a good relationship with Maths & Science. Whether you want to pursue it in the future or not, the fundamental skills developed in these subjects are useful and applicable in many areas of life. I certainly would not have had the confidence to tackle difficult challenges or put myself in spaces I felt I did not belong if I had not been introduced to the resilience needed to tackle maths. So I want every student I come across to have a good go at Maths & Science, because I know that STEM is for everyone.

About the lesson

I use a standard approach that emphasises following examples to learn and active-recall and questions to test knowledge. However, instead of covering all topics, I prefer to focus on filling gaps in knowledge and learning exam techniques. This I believe speeds up the process and ensures the student shows the full extent of their ability in exam conditions. I also like to teach students to be independent learners and work through challenges methodically so that, if they do come across something they haven’t encountered, they have a way to solve the problem. The sessions will be relaxed with opportunities to ask questions throughout. I hope to build a good relationship with the student, and I’m happy to give any advice regarding their school work or future education plans.
