About Olivia

As an educator, I am defined by my deep commitment to inclusive, culturally responsive teaching and my specialized ability to support students with diverse learning needs. Currently, as a 5th grade teacher at Hayt Elementary and a graduate student at Northwestern University, I balance my daily professional practice with an ongoing dedication to the latest pedagogical research.

My teaching identity is built on several core pillars:

A Champion for Inclusion
I specialize in creating environments where students with learning disabilities, ADHD, and other exceptionalities feel both challenged and supported. By partnering closely with special education co-teachers and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), I ensure that inclusion is a daily reality rather than just a policy. I have a proven track record of using data-driven differentiation to achieve high growth for all my students, ensuring that every learner in my classroom has a clear path to success.

Literacy and Language Expert
With endorsements as a Reading Teacher and in English as a Second Language (ESL), I possess the technical expertise to bridge significant linguistic and literacy gaps. I am highly skilled at supporting newcomers and multilingual learners, using scaffolded instruction and targeted vocabulary development to help them navigate academic content while finding their own unique voices in reading and writing.

A Restorative Community Builder
Beyond academics, I prioritize the emotional well-being of my students. By integrating Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and restorative practices into my daily routines, I foster a sense of belonging and mutual respect within the classroom. I firmly believe that a safe, comfortable environment is the essential foundation for any meaningful learning to take place.

Data-Driven and Professional
I approach education with a scientist’s precision and an artist’s heart. I am highly proficient in modern educational frameworks and diagnostic tools, using consistent progress monitoring to track student growth and adjust my instruction in real time. My professionalism is marked by a collaborative spirit, whether I am working with administrative teams, leading a group of camp staff, or partnering with families to celebrate student milestones.

Holistic Literacy Tutoring for Upper Elementary Success
Teaching Methods & Techniques
My approach is rooted in the science of reading and writing, utilizing multi-sensory techniques and scaffolded instruction to bridge learning gaps. I employ a "Gradual Release of Responsibility" model (I Do, We Do, You Do), ensuring students feel supported as they move from observing a skill to mastering it independently. For reading, I focus on reciprocal teaching involving predicting, questioning, clarifying, and summarizing to deepen comprehension. For writing, I use mentor texts and graphic organizers to help students visualize the structure of their essays before they ever put pen to paper.

A Typical Lesson Plan -- Each 60-minute session is highly structured to maximize engagement:
- 0 to 10 mins: Knowledge Activation (a high interest "hook" or quick write to settle into the session).
- 10 to 25 mins:Explicit Strategy Instruction (modeling a specific skill, such as identifying a theme or using transitional phrases).
- 25 to 50 mins: Collaborative Practice & Feedback (working through a text or draft together with immediate, restorative coaching).
- 50 to 60 mins: Reflection & Goal Setting (the student identifies one "win" and one goal for our next meeting to build self advocacy).

What Sets Me Apart
What distinguishes my practice is my professional background in Inclusion and ESL. I am an expert in Multi Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and data driven differentiation; I do not just teach the curriculum, I adapt it to the student’s specific cognitive and linguistic needs. Because I am currently a 5th grade teacher and a graduate student at Northwestern, my strategies are informed by the most current research and align directly with the rigorous expectations of modern upper elementary classrooms.

Target Audience
My lessons are specifically designed for 5th grade students who are preparing for the significant academic transition to middle school. I specialize in supporting:
- Students with diverse learning needs (IEPs/504 plans), including those with ADHD or learning disabilities.
- English Language Learners (ESL) who need to build academic vocabulary and fluency.
- General education students looking to sharpen their analytical writing and critical reading stamina.
