Lesson Overview: Understanding Fractions as Equal PartsGrade Level: 3rd GradeSubject: MathematicsDuration: 30 minutesObjective: Students will identify, represent, and write simple unit fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4) using visual area models.Materials: Whiteboards & markers, fraction circles/strips (manipulatives), exit tickets.1.Hook & Learning Objective:Time: 3 minutes.Active Strategy: Call and Response / Visual AnchorTeacher Action: Hold up a paper "pizza." Cut it into two uneven pieces and ask: "Who wants the bigger piece?"Student Action: React and point out that it's "not fair."Key Point: Introduce the objective: "Today we will learn that fractions are equal parts of a whole."2.I Do (Direct Instruction):Time: 7 minutes.Active Strategy: Thinking Aloud & Visual ModelingTeacher Action: Draw a circle on the board divided into 4 equal quarters.Explicit Modeling:"First, I count the total equal parts: 1, 2, 3, 4. That goes on the bottom (denominator).""Next, I shade 1 part. That goes on the top (numerator)."Read it aloud: "One-fourth."Movement Integration: Teach a quick hand gesture—pat head for numerator (top), stomp foot once for denominator (bottom).3.We Do (Guided Practice):Time: 10 minutes.Active Strategy: Turn and Talk + Whiteboard CheckPrompt 1 (Partner Work): Give pairs fraction strips. Ask them to build a model showing $1/3$.Turn & Talk (1 minute): "Tell your shoulder partner how you know your shape shows thirds."Prompt 2 (All-Class Check): Display a circle split into 4 parts with 2 shaded.Ask students to write the fraction on their personal whiteboards.Call out: "3, 2, 1...
