About Alison
Hi there! I'm Aly Guan, and I’m so excited to help you on your English learning journey! Originally from the Bay Area, I’ve now made Portland my home, where I enjoy exploring the city’s coffee shops, restaurants, and beautiful outdoor spaces. When I'm not teaching, you can usually find me out on a walk or hike, taking in nature, or spending time with my three cats—my furry companions who keep me on my toes!
I absolutely love reading and discovering new books, and I believe learning English can be just as fun and rewarding as diving into a great story. I'm also passionate about food, meeting new people, and traveling whenever I get the chance.
In my lessons, I aim to make learning relaxed, enjoyable, and engaging. I want you to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and celebrating your progress! Let's make learning English a fun adventure together!

Example Lesson Outline (Level: Beginner to Intermediate)
1. Warm-up (10 minutes)
Activity: Quick conversation or icebreaker to get the student talking in English
2. Reading Activity (15 minutes)
Goal: Improve reading fluency and comprehension.
Activity:
Step 1: Read a short passage aloud.
Step 2: Discuss the meaning of any new vocabulary words.
Step 3: Ask comprehension questions.
Step 4: Summarize the passage together to ensure understanding.
3. Grammar Focus (15 minutes)
Goal: Reinforce basic grammar rules.
Activity:
Step 1: Introduce a grammar rule.
Step 2: Provide 3-5 example sentences and have the student identify the correct usage.
Step 3: Practice by giving the student incomplete sentences to finish.
Step 4: Discuss common mistakes and correct them together.
4. Spelling Practice (10 minutes)
Goal: Improve spelling through repetition and recognition.
Activity:
Step 1: Provide a list of 5-10 words for the student to spell aloud.
Step 2: Write each word on the board and have the student repeat after you.
Step 3: Give the student a spelling quiz (either written or verbal).
Step 4: Review mistakes and offer tips for remembering tricky words.
5. Review & Wrap-up (10 minutes)
Activity
Review key points from the lesson.
Ask the student to summarize what they’ve learned.
Provide encouragement and praise for their efforts.
Assign a small practice task or homework
Homework/Follow-up:
Reading: Read a short story or article and answer 5 comprehension questions.
Grammar: Complete 5 sentences with correct subject-verb agreement.
Spelling: Write a short paragraph using 5 new spelling words.
Lessons can be personalized and adjusted based on proficiency level in addition to working with the students for help on homework or school work!
