About Lily

Dedicated to Unlocking Every Student’s Infinite Potential

Hello! I am a Primary/Junior Ontario Certified Teacher dedicated to making learning an adventure rather than a chore. My journey to the classroom was unique—teaching is my second career, a choice I made because I realized that helping young minds grow isn't just what I do; it’s who I am.

A Passionate Path to Teaching

I transitioned into education because I discovered a profound passion for witnessing the "aha!" moment when a complex concept suddenly clicks for a child. Because I chose this path as a second career, I bring a wealth of maturity, life experience, and a genuine enthusiasm to every lesson. I don't just teach because it is my job; I teach because I believe every student has an infinite ability to succeed when given the right environment.

My Philosophy: Learning by Doing

I believe that children learn best when they aren't just listening, but doing. My philosophy is rooted in experiential learning. Instead of just memorizing facts, I encourage students to interact with the Ontario curriculum to gain a hands-on understanding. Whether we are exploring math through manipulatives or language through creative storytelling, I ensure the material is tangible, relevant, and engaging.

The Classroom Atmosphere

In our sessions, you can expect a perfect balance of compassion and discipline. I pride myself on being a caring and patient mentor who understands the frustrations students sometimes feel when a subject is difficult. However, I also maintain a structured, disciplined environment that fosters focus and respect. I bring a high level of energy to our work, ensuring that even the most challenging subjects feel approachable.

My Ultimate Goal

My mission goes beyond helping your child get a better grade on their next report card. I want to teach them how to learn. By building their confidence and providing a solid academic foundation, I aim to empower them with the realization that their potential for success is truly limitless.

I look forward to partnering with your family to help your child thrive!

Building Strong Foundations in English Literacy

As an Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT) specializing in the Primary/Junior divisions (K-6), I view literacy as the cornerstone of all academic success. My approach focuses on the dual pillars of English: mastering the technical "mechanics" of grammar and unlocking the "magic" of creative and procedural writing.

My Teaching Methodology & Techniques

I utilize a Balanced Literacy Approach aligned with the latest Ontario Curriculum updates and the Science of Reading. My techniques include:

Explicit Instruction for Grammar: I believe grammar is the "skeleton" of good writing. I teach parts of speech, punctuation, and sentence structure through direct, clear instruction so students have the tools they need to be understood.

The Workshop Model: For writing, I use a "Writer’s Workshop" style. We brainstorm together, I provide a mini-lesson on a specific skill, and then the student engages in active writing while I provide real-time coaching.

Scaffolding for Creativity: Many students feel "stuck" when facing a blank page. I use graphic organizers, story starters, and "hands-on" prompts to help them tap into their creativity for both creative stories and procedural (how-to) writing.

A Typical Lesson Plan:

A quick word game or "grammar hunt" to get the student’s brain focused on language. Focused instruction on a specific mechanical skill (e.g., using commas, verb tenses, or proper capitalization) using interactive exercises. We look at a short, excellent piece of writing (creative or procedural) to analyze how the author did it. The student applies the grammar skill and the mentor text style to their own writing. I sit "shoulder-to-shoulder" with them to offer immediate feedback. The student reads their favorite sentence or paragraph aloud, celebrating their progress and setting a goal for the next session.

OCT Expertise: I am fully trained in the Ontario Achievement Chart. I know exactly how your child’s teacher is grading their "Communication" and "Organization" in writing.

I don't just teach students what to write; I teach them why we use certain structures. This builds a deeper understanding that lasts a lifetime.

I make writing hands-on. If we are doing "Procedural Writing," we might actually walk through the steps of a task to ensure their instructions are clear and logical.

Because I chose teaching as my second career, I bring a level of patience, life experience, and genuine enthusiasm that makes students feel safe to take risks with their writing.

Who These Lessons Are For:

I support students from Kindergarten through Grade 6.

Early Readers/Writers (K-2): Focus on phonics, sight words, and building the confidence to put "pencil to paper."

Developing Writers (3-6): Focus on paragraph structure, complex grammar, persuasive essays, and imaginative creative writing.

Specific Needs: I am experienced in adapting lessons for students who struggle with fine motor skills (the physical act of writing) or those who need extra help with executive functioning and organizing their thoughts.
