About Chrissy
I am a former secondary English teacher with a master's degree in education from Cleveland State University, and undergraduate degrees in Integrated Language Arts and Broadcast Journalism from Ohio University. My specialty is writing. I enjoy helping students move from staring at a blank page to actually having something to say. I've worked with students across the full range of ability, from reluctant writers to those preparing for AP Literature and AP Language exams, and I focus on finding the real root of what's making writing difficult, not just fixing the paper in front of us. I'd love to help your student build skills they can carry with them long after our sessions end.

I believe students learn best when they feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and taking the time to understand *why* something works. As a former secondary English Language Arts teacher with a Master’s degree in Education, I bring both classroom experience and a genuine appreciation for the fact that every student learns differently. My goal is to meet students where they are, figure out what is getting in their way, and give them practical strategies that help them become more confident and independent learners.
A typical lesson begins with a conversation about what the student is working on and where they are feeling stuck. From there, we might work through a reading passage, analyze a piece of literature, strengthen a writing assignment, review grammar and mechanics, or practice test questions. I like to model my thinking, work through examples together, and then gradually have the student take the lead. I also pay close attention to patterns in a student's work so that we're addressing the underlying skill and not simply fixing one assignment or one missed question.
What sets me apart is my experience as an actual classroom teacher. I know what it looks like when a student understands a concept but struggles to express it, when a skill has a small gap underneath it, or when frustration has started to affect confidence. There is almost always a reason something isn't clicking, and finding that reason is part of my job as a teacher. I want students to leave lessons feeling not only that they accomplished something, but that they understand themselves as learners a little better.
I work with middle and high school students, including students seeking support in reading, writing, grammar, literature, English Language Arts, and standardized test preparation. I also welcome students who simply want to become stronger writers or more confident readers. Whether a student needs help catching up, wants to improve a particular skill, or is aiming for a higher level of academic performance, I tailor lessons to their needs, goals, and pace.
