About Octavian
I am a full-time private Mathematics tutor with an Oxford research background and more than 10,000 hours of one-on-one teaching experience across every level, from middle school through graduate coursework.
My training is in Physics and Mathematics — an MSc from Paris, an engineering degree from Toulouse, and an MSc from Oxford, where I taught and conducted research for over a decade. At the level I teach it, math is not a separate subject from physics: it is the same discipline. Calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, probability, complex numbers, mechanics — I have used all of it in active research, which means I teach it from the inside rather than out of a textbook.
My students' results speak for themselves. Twin sisters I prepared in advanced mathematics and university admissions exams both received offers from Oxford. A student I coached through IB Mathematics HL earned a 7. A university student who had failed multiple exams passed all ten after our sessions and went on to graduate. A candidate I prepared for quantitative finance interviews at top New York and London hedge funds described the preparation as masterful in handling stochastic calculus, time-series modeling, and linear algebra under pressure.
I cover the full mathematics curriculum: middle and high school math, NY State Regents (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II), Precalculus, AP Calculus AB/BC, AP Statistics, IB Math AA/AI (HL and SL), SAT and ACT math, SHSAT/ISEE/SSAT, competition math (AMC 10/12, AIME), and college through graduate level, including Real Analysis, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Probability and Statistics, and Quantitative Methods for Finance.
I keep my roster small and take on only students who are serious about the subject. If that's you, get in touch.

Every student begins with a diagnostic session. Before covering any new material, I pinpoint exactly where the gaps are — not just in content knowledge, but in mathematical reasoning, proof technique, and test strategy. The plan is built entirely around that diagnosis. There is no generic syllabus.
Math at the AP and college level is not a computation subject. It requires a coherent understanding of structure — why theorems are true, why methods work, and what happens when the conditions fail. Students who only know how to execute procedures will always hit a ceiling. Students who understand the underlying mathematics can solve problems they have never seen before. That is what I teach, and it is the difference between a B and an A, between a 3 and a 5 on an AP exam, between failing and passing a college course.
For the SAT, the AMC/AIME, and other competitive exams, I focus on the problem-solving fluency these tests demand — the ability to think clearly under time pressure about unfamiliar problems. This cannot be drilled through practice tests alone. It requires genuine mathematical intuition, which takes time and the right kind of practice to develop.
Within 24 hours of every session, the student receives fully typed notes on what we covered, refreshers on the concepts that need further attention, and a written summary of where they stand and what to focus on before next time. Parents are copied in as standard. This is part of every lesson I teach, without exception.
I teach online and in person across New York City. I hold a strict cancellation policy: sessions canceled with less than 24 hours' notice are charged in full, as a missed slot cannot be offered to another student. Exceptions are made only for serious illness with a doctor's note.

Octavian helped my daughter Sandra overcome her dyslexia and be among the best in her class. She scored 780 on the Math portion of the SAT. Sandra now actually thinks and no longer learns formulas by heart without understanding their meaning. Her fear of Math is gone and she is now doing very well, majoring in Economics.
My son Jerry worked with Octavian throughout high school, and I saw firsthand the impact he had. Jerry always put in the effort, but math never came easily to him. Octavian helped him develop a much deeper understanding of the material instead of just showing him how to get through homework problems.
Over time, Jerry earned A's in both Algebra and Calculus and scored a perfect 800 on the SAT Math section. He was also admitted to Columbia University, which meant he could receive an outstanding education without having to move across the country.
What I appreciated most was that Octavian treated tutoring as more than preparing for the next test. He expected Jerry to think, explain his reasoning, and really master the concepts. That approach paid off.
I would recommend Octavian to any student who is willing to work hard but finds math more difficult than other subjects. He has a way of making challenging ideas much more approachable, and in Jerry's case, the results spoke for themselves.View more recommendations
