About Sylvain
My name is Sylvain, I am entering my third year of higher education in Physics at EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne). More specifically, after two years in Lausanne, I had the chance to do an exchange year at EPFL's sister school, ETHZ (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Zürich).
I particularly like mathematics and physics, two of the main subjects of my curriculum. I'm always eager to learn :)
I followed a classic course in France before leaving for Switzerland, in my luggage:
• the Brevet des Collèges (highest honours)
• the Scientific Baccalaureate with specialization in Engineering Sciences and Computer Science (with high honours)

If you are passionate about the fascinating world of science (mathematics, physics, etc.) or on the other side, if it puts you off, I would exchange with you on the subjects that interest you or on those that seem hard or even incomprehensible to you.
There isn't a secret or miracle method to instantly become "good at math". It is fundamentally necessary to have a goal to improve - whether you want good grades or understand concepts. Then, of course, you have to practice, put yourself in a situation facing problems and try to see how to apply general results to particular cases. As with sport or music, the more regular the training, the smoother the progress!
First lesson: I suggest that we get to know each other quickly and that you explain to me what made you want to take this particular lesson. I need to be able to understand what your goals are. For example, if your first wish is to get good grades, we will spend more time repeating "standard exercises". I will ask you later if you already have an idea of a form of course that you would like (start by reviewing the lesson? and dive directly into the exercises?). If you don't know, I suggest the following lesson structure:
1. Start by answering any questions left unanswered: doubts must vanish! There are no silly questions. The questions may concern the course, the exercises, another reading, or a video.
2. Review the course: this is a fundamental aspect. A good mastery of it often allows a broader vision when attacking an exercise. You are less likely to be stuck. If it suits you, I will ask you to explain the course to me as if I were a novice on the subject. I think it is one of the most effective methods to see if one understands notions.
3. Train: on exercises. As said above, problems make it possible to meet various situations. They help in building a solid base of knowledge and methods which prove very useful when confronted with new exercises. Like a deep course knowledge, a good "culture" of typical exercises helps to find ideas to solve unknown situations.
4. Correct yourself: learning inevitably involves failure (e.g. in tests, in exercises). As in other disciplines, the systematic correction of errors allows improvement. Spending time understanding their origin is crucial. Do they come from a misunderstanding of the course? calculation errors? Once the error is identified, we work on it.
Following courses: The following lessons will follow the structure presented above (or the structure that you will have proposed to me).
• If I identify a recurring error, I can write exercises specifically to try to correct it.
• Depending on the amount of work outside of this class, I may ask you to solve additional exercises or try to prepare your explanation of a lesson for the next class.
If you are curious, I could also offer you readings or videos dealing with various subjects. With all the tools we have (e.g. YouTube), it is easy to find interesting topics and explanations.
I can give the course in French or English.
