About William

I am a National Board Certified Mathematics Teacher with 31 years of experience teaching mathematics in public schools, independent schools, and international schools in the United States and abroad. I hold a B.A. in Mathematics and Political Science, magna cum laude, from Williams College, where I also received the Morgan Prize for Achievement and Promise in Teaching.

I have taught in ten schools across five countries, including the International School of Lausanne, Taipei American School, TASIS Switzerland, Green School Bali, and Proctor Academy. At Proctor, an independent boarding school in New Hampshire, I served as Head of the Mathematics Department.

My experience with IB Mathematics extends well beyond teaching. As one of five Deputy Chief Examiners worldwide for IB Standard Level Mathematics, I worked with curriculum and assessment, wrote examination papers, and led international teams of examiners.

In 2013, I received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, one of the highest national honors for K-12 mathematics and science teachers. The award included a trip to Washington, D.C., in 2015, where I met with scientists, policymakers, and President Obama.

I bring extensive experience, professionalism, and genuine enthusiasm for mathematics to every student I work with.

About the lesson

My goal is to open students’ minds to the beauty, elegance, and power of mathematics. My lessons are highly individualized and designed to develop understanding, confidence, and independence, not simply to get through homework.

Before each session, I review the student’s notes, assignments, assessments, or specific questions so that I can prepare specifically for their needs. A typical lesson combines conceptual explanation, guided problem-solving, discussion, and challenging problems that encourage students to make connections between mathematical ideas. I adapt my approach continually, using questions and discussion to identify what a student understands and where further work is needed.

What sets me apart is my 31 years of classroom experience and unusually deep experience with IB and AP assessment. I have taught IB Mathematics and AP Calculus, served for five years as a Deputy Chief Examiner for IB Standard Level Mathematics, writing examination papers and leading international teams of examiners, and spent three years marking AP Calculus examinations.

I specialize in IB Mathematics AA and AI, at both SL and HL, and AP Calculus AB and BC. I work particularly well with students at international and independent schools who want an experienced teacher who can help them develop both mathematical understanding and examination performance.

Students can also contact me by WhatsApp or text outside our regular tutoring hours, and I respond to questions the same day. I also welcome communication with parents and, when useful, with a student’s classroom teacher.
