About Oliver
I am new to professional tutoring, but I have some experience in teaching maths.
I have:
While working at a school during my gap year:
-Provided in class support for years 8,9,10 in Maths and Science in various schools around London
-Took a group of 4 or 5 year 9 students that may not fully benefit from learning in a classroom environment out of class to deliver more personalised learning.
-Ran an after school catch-up session in Science for year 8 pupils.
-Ran science and maths clubs for primary school pupils.
During my time at the University of Sheffield:
-Worked with the University of Sheffield as a mentor for year 9 and 10 students, which involved talking about plans for the future as well as helping with schoolwork, which often included helping with maths work.
-Volunteered with the University of Sheffield as a 'Number Hero' where I did maths work with year 6 pupils, mostly helping them prepare for SATs. This was sometimes in class support, and sometimes focused on a few particular pupils who struggled in a classroom setting (one had ADHD for example).
I've also informally helped friends with maths throughout my studies.

My lessons are for anyone that needs help with maths. A lot of times maths can seem impossible to understand or do. My aim is to make understanding and doing maths seem achievable. I think there are many different routes to the understanding of the same thing, so my lessons will be catered to each individual.
My lessons will essentially consist of trying to figure out what it is specifically that is not understood, and then trying to provide an intuitive basis for the student to arrive at this understanding.
I'm a big believer in the idea that increase in an increase in the confidence in one's mathematical ability corresponds to an increase in their actual mathematical ability, so my lessons will also aim to improve confidence in maths, and as such they will be relaxed and easygoing.
I will likely use things like step-by-step guides, multiple explanations to provide different perspectives, examples, and going through past papers to help achieve this.
