About Benjamin

Hi, I’m Ben, a Financial Mathematics student at the University of Leeds and a GCSE and A-level maths tutor.

Many students find maths difficult when it shifts from numeracy - the basic operations and number rules - to using maths as a language for explaining logic and reasoning. I help students make that transition by focusing on understanding rather than memorising methods.

I tutor students of all abilities, from those who lack confidence to those aiming for the highest grades. Lessons are tailored to each student’s goals, strengths and weaknesses, combining clear explanations, visual methods, problem solving and exam practice.

I focus on helping students understand why methods work and apply their knowledge to unfamiliar questions. Lessons typically include targeted teaching, guided exam questions and independent practice, with homework and feedback to support progress between sessions.

Alongside tutoring, I create maths educational content, developing simple and intuitive ways to explain challenging ideas. I also worked as a fine-dining chef for two years, an experience that strengthened my organisation and attention to detail.

Outside of maths, I enjoy playing chess and solving complex Sudoku variants. Both hobbies have strengthened my logical thinking, patience and ability to approach problems from different angles - skills that I also bring to my tutoring.

My aim is to help students become more confident, independent mathematicians with stronger understanding and exam technique.

About the lesson

Hi, I’m Ben - a Maths student at Uni of Leeds and a maths tutor for GCSE and A level students of all abilities and exam boards, both online and in-person.

Everyone can do maths. The problem most students have is the way it is explained to them - from an outdated textbook in a class of 30 with no time to discuss what is actually going on. That’s why I make bespoke lessons for each session to focus on the student’s weaknesses and preferred learning style.

Typical session : 1 hr
- 5 mins fun problem-solving warm-up
- 25 mins lesson on key ideas, methods, and underlying concepts
- 15 mins working through past paper questions together
- 10 mins of student working through past paper questions
- 5 mins wrap-up and reflect, set topic / goals for next session

Homework is set each week and returned to me within 5 days. The marked work is sent back to them within 24 hrs with thorough feedback.

My current and previous students have reported:
- Better understanding of the curriculum
- Fewer gaps in their knowledge
- Greater confidence in lessons and exams
- Improved exam technique and problem-solving skills

My students have also made clear improvements in their grades, with students I have worked with over a full term improving by at least one grade.
