About Joseph

I’m Joseph, a second-year medical student at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University and an Honours graduate in Biomedical Science from York University. My foundation in the biological sciences extends beyond coursework and is grounded in clinical training, research, and ongoing teaching throughout medical school.

Since starting medical school, I have taken on multiple leadership and teaching roles focused on science education and skill development. I serve as an executive member of the Point-of-Care Ultrasound and Emergency Medicine interest groups, where I help teach anatomy, physiology, and clinical reasoning through hands-on skills sessions. I am also the president of the Lifestyle Medicine Interest Group, organizing educational events that translate biological concepts—such as metabolism, sleep physiology, and stress responses—into practical health applications. These roles require breaking down complex information clearly and adapting explanations to different learners, skills I bring directly into tutoring.

In parallel, I remain actively involved in research, including peer-reviewed work, quality improvement projects, and national conference presentations. This ongoing academic engagement keeps my understanding of biology current and evidence-based. I also mentor students one-on-one through access-to-medicine programs, providing structured feedback, study planning, and exam preparation, experiences that have further refined my ability to teach effectively at an individual level.

As a tutor, I focus on helping students truly understand biology rather than memorize it. I combine clear explanations with proven study strategies to help students build confidence, improve grades, and develop skills that prepare them for the academic demands of senior high school and university science programs.

About the lesson

My biology and anatomy lessons are designed to help students truly understand the material, not just memorize it for a test. I focus on building a strong foundation in key biology concepts while teaching effective study strategies that make learning easier and more efficient over time.

Each session is tailored to the student’s goals, whether that’s preparing for an upcoming test, improving overall grades, or building confidence for future science courses. We start by identifying areas of difficulty, then break complex topics into clear, manageable ideas using diagrams, examples, and guided questions. I emphasize active learning where students are encouraged to explain concepts in their own words, apply them to practice questions, and connect new information to what they already know.

I also teach evidence-based learning techniques, such as active recall and spaced practice, so students leave with tools they can use independently outside of our sessions. Lessons often include practice questions, exam-style problems, and strategies for approaching multiple-choice and short-answer questions commonly seen in high school biology.

My approach is patient, supportive, and structured. The goal of each lesson is not only to improve performance on the next assessment, but to help students feel more confident, organized, and capable when studying biology—skills that carry forward into senior high school and university-level science courses.
