About Mikala

Mikala Nims is a passionate modern dancer who uses movement to spur conversations about society. She graduated from Roger Williams as a double major in Dance Performance Studies and Anthropology/Sociology. Her degree gave her the opportunity to learn from and perform for esteemed movement artists such as Sayer Mansfield, Jenny Rocha, and DeAnna Pellecchia. She rounded out her dance training by studying abroad in London.
Currently, Mikala is in her third year of teaching dance at public charter schools. She also teaches at studios in RI and south coast MA.
She has made and been in dance films and has performed as a guest artist for Nozama Dance Collective, and Expanding Community. She has choreographed for Acton Cooperative Theater, Roger Williams Dance Theater, and Attitude Academy of Performing Arts. Most recently, Mikala worked on “Who is the Houseboy” a multidisciplinary collaboration between Wilbury Theater Group and Brown Arts Institute.

About the lesson

Lesson Duration: 60min

Typically the first 40 minutes are dedicated to conditioning, structured improvisation, and technical exercises and passes across the floor.

The remaining 20 minutes are dedicated to learning prepared phrase work in which the techniques we covered in the beginning of class can be further explored.

Time can also be set aside for choreography workshops if student would like to deepen their own choreographic skills and knowledge.

Classes are for students beginner to pre-professional. The importance of these classes lie in each student gaining a deeper understanding of the mechanics of how their body can flow through the movement safely and efficiently. The emphasis is placed on each student's individual goals!

Mikala listened to the dance goals I had and set out a plan to help me achieve them. She’s patient and always cheered me on. Her knowledge and love of dance was so evident. I had a blast during every lesson.

Not only does Mikala come prepared for every lesson, question, or idea we throw at her, she knows exactly how to make every class fun. We learned so much technique and spent an equal amount of time applying it into a new choreography! She encouraged us to choreograph some dances and guided us when we needed help. We learned so much and the improvement was visible! Could not have asked for a better teacher!
