About Danny L

I am 52 years old. I have three kids, none of them play an instrument, all are big time music fans. I started playing guitar at the age of ten in fourth grade. Quiet Riot just released Metal Health, with the full video on constant rotation on MTV, back when music television was the hottest thing out. The mask, the straight jacket, the opening drum fill. It got my blood pumping. But before that, at the age of six my uncle Jeff, who was an outstanding guitar player, gave me my first record, Kiss/Rock & Roll Over. He put it on my Fisher Price record player and Dr. Love blared through those cheap distorted speakers. I was fascinated by the theatrics of Kiss, and I was bitten by the rock and roll bug.

I can't lie and say I enjoyed my guitar lessons at 11. I wasn't patient enough to practice at home for an hour a day, which seemed like an eternity to me. It lasted six months and the guitar disappeared somewhere. Junior high rolls around and I am a half-shaved head, colored hair skater punk. My two good friends lived next-door to each other. Adam played drums and tommy's dad acquired a cheap department store guitar and 5-watt amp that was more like 2 watts. I had also aquired a guitar somehow, but a new kid moved into the hood who also played guitar, he, and his older sister screamed everything about the punk image and lifestyle. We couldn't have three guitar players, so I figured since my dad played bass, I'll give it a shot. I acquired a Sears Hondo bass that had action as wide as the Grand Canyon, which you had to beat on with a pick to get any tone out of. I broke many low "E" strings. I took lessons at school in the beginning band. I had to learn how to read music again, but now in a different clef. This time my approach was different. My mom must have hated this point in my life, every time I saw her, her only words were "turn it down". So, if your parents aren't telling you that, you're not practicing enough! I got a paper route and saved up for my first real bass, a white and black fender precision style Washburn, who were most known for their pianos. Then in High School you could take beginning guitar as an elective, so I did to relearn the guitar. I always had a guitar or bass in my hands unless I was sleeping. Music was always preferred over the TV being on.

I then took music theory in my senior year of high school to learn more about song structure, timing, scales. It's important to know and understand the verbiage of the trade so that you can explain your ideas while writing songs with other musicians. That is the course you take to learn how to do all of that.

That was the start of my music adventure that has taken me to Europe and all over the country. I enlisted in the Air Force after graduating and stayed for almost 22 years. I played in a band wherever I was stationed, even in Korea! There are some very talented musicians in the services. I played with some Britian's while stationed in England. Exceptionally good musicians as well. I even had a custom guitar made for me while stationed in Korea. I went on 10 deployments over my years, and I took a guitar with me on each one, even to Iraq two times. My guitar never got damaged. I pursue music full time now that I have the ability to. I extremely enjoy teaching and watching students learn their first song all the way through and hearing about their first bands or live performances, which I have attended many to support my students. I am passionate about music, and I understand how therapeutic it can be to positively channel emotions in a healthy way. I hope you like my teaching style and I look forward to connecting with all of you.

I completely understand that we all learn in diverse ways. Some are visual, some are hands on, and some are auditory, or you can learn by all three or just two. The lesson plan is flexible to meet your learning curve and is done at your pace. My teaching format is extremely loose and structured to the student and what their goals are. You're paying me to teach you, so you're driving this train. I will tailor your lessons specifically around your short and long-term goals. With real-time objectives to monitor your progress. At the end of each objective, I will teach you how to play one of your favorite songs of your choosing. This is done to demonstrate your progress and prove you are progressing.

Teaching Methods:
I can teach either by sheet music if you want to learn how to read music or teach you how to read tablature and other more modern techniques. The student will still be required to know and memorize the notes on the fret board, which is learned by section and done at the learning pace of the student.

Guitar and bass set-ups are available if needed. It's important to set the guitar up for the student's comfortability and playability. This will be done with the student present and taught the names of the components and how to properly change their strings.

*The first set up is free given how the lesson is taught. Any subsequent set-ups are $30. You must supply your own strings.
