  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

The sciences have always been my favourite subjects at school. My experience volunteering in tutoring children in Botswana and my university degree in Medical Science both motivated me to become a tutor and share my knowledge, passion and study techniques with others. Additionally, private tutoring has provided valuable experience for me to become a qualified teacher in the near future.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

A level and IB sciences are a big step up from GCSE content. It is particularly important for students to fully understand the mechanisms of reactions, which proves to be difficult for many. Organic chemistry and nuclear physics exemplify this challenge. While the countless reaction pathways and equations are confusing, there are key patterns and principles many students are unfortunately not taught, making the sciences particularly daunting. My A* in biology, physics and chemistry have proven the legitimacy of my approach to understanding the sciences. I pass on my many study and questions-answering techniques onto my tutees, which improves their knowledge, writing skills and confidence.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My AS level chemistry teacher Mr. Noble is undoubtedly my biggest inspiration. He taught me patience, active listening and the importance of passion for both the subject and working with young people.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A tutor must first and foremost understand a student's needs before attempting to help them. This requires active listening, being flexible and regularly seeking feedback from students. A good tutor adopts to the tutee's preferences and is not discouraged by constructive feedback.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Being surrounded by many of my country's top achieving scholars at school was a big reason behind my successful A level results. My best friend at the time was an aspiring doctor. Her motivation for studying was not limited to finding the content interesting but also a desire to help other people. To obtain good grades, one must have a larger vision behind wanting to get said grades. Vision grants passion, passion drives discipline and discipline produces results.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Back in secondary school and in my first year of university, I struggled with poor mental and physical health. My pain and lack of energy hindered my ability to commit to my studies. Since then, I have refined my time management skills and applied motivational techniques. I like to remind myself the reason why I commit to studying and teaching the sciences. Conversing with people who share similar journeys and visions helped reignite my passion and distracted myself from my poor health. A routine, good planning and good work life balance go a long way to increase my energy and concentration. I am in the best mental space I have been in for years. I wish to assist anyone who is currently on a similar journey I was once on.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Working in a laboratory was a childhood ambition I fulfilled in 2022. I completed a yearlong placement studying nerves and hormones in zebrafish. I had the privilege of conducting husbandry of genetically modified organisms, microscopic dissection and data analysis. The experience has improved my professionalism, rigour and communication skills. Any student with an aspiration for research and academia is more than welcome to converse with me on the topic.

Digital art, writing and Muay Thai are my three main passions outside of teaching and the sciences. I have been writing and illustrating a short story based in South Africa. Despite my illnesses, I try to keep active with Thai kickboxing. I help coach beginner kickboxers and prepare them for competitions. My hobbies have sharpened my resilience, discipline and coaching skills.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

My teaching style is adapted to students with dyslexia, autism and/or inexpert English. Being able to accommodate neurodivergent students makes me one of the most popular tutors on the website in the Southwest since 2020. My openness to discussing academia, mental health and career choices make me a tutor who goes beyond just the syllabus, they make me a Superprof.
