About Joan

I started my teaching career as an enrichment and remedial kindergarten reading teacher in Bloomington, Minnesota. I worked for 5 years as a special education kindergarten teacher and Academic Therapy Tutor at Groves Academy in St. Louis Park Minnesota. I continued my passion to help students in the Hopkins & Robinsdale School Districts as a reading and math tutor. Before beginning in private practice, I worked as an academic therapist with the Integrative Medicine Clinic at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis and Park Nicollet Alexander Center in Eden Prairie

I attended Bemidji State University where I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education with a math emphasis in November 1992. In May of 1992 I completed my kindergarten student teaching and kindergarten intercultural course work at Vaxjo University in Sweden. I later went on to complete course work in all four levels of the Orton-Gillingham Method through the Upper Midwest Branch of the International Dyslexia Association, Orton-Gillingham of Minnesota and Hamline University. I did studies with Groves Academy in Singapore Math and Kansas Writing Strategies.

I began my private practice in 2006. I am eager to work with students who have learning needs, especially dyslexia.

I live with my family and tutor out of my home office located in Bloomington, MN. I offer both in person and online tutoring modalities.

I find it a privilege to help students with special educational needs and I want to work with families dedicated to providing the very best instruction for their children.

About the lesson

I have experience and training with Woodin Math, Singapore Math and basic math strategies. I realize that every student learns differently and I strive to provide lessons that encorporate both multisensory and hands on activities. I offer 50 minute math lessons both online and in person.

For my online learners I use a platform that has a white board feature that allows my students and I to work in real-time on skills. It also for each of us to upload work that can be seen and manipulated on the whiteboard.
