Vocal Technique and Exercise:
Building a strong vocal foundation is crucial in Carnatic music. I'll guide you through a series of vocal exercises and techniques, focusing on breath control, voice modulation, and improving tonal quality. Through consistent practice, you'll witness remarkable progress in your singing abilities
Structure of a Class:
Introduction and Orientation:
Welcome students and provide an overview of Carnatic music.
Explain the historical significance and cultural aspects of Carnatic music.
Familiarize students with the basic concepts, terminology, and structure of Carnatic music.
Swara (Pitch) and Shruti (Tuning):
Teach the swara system, which consists of the seven basic notes (Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni).
Rhythm and Tala:
Introduce the tala system, which is the rhythmic framework of Carnatic music.
Teach different talas, such as Adi Tala, Rupaka Tala, and Misra Chapu Tala.
Varnam:
Teach the Varnam, a composition that encompasses both melodic and rhythmic aspects.
Focus on different types of Varnams (like Adi Tala Varnams and Ata Tala Varnams).
Kritis (Compositions):
Introduce the Kriti, a longer and more complex composition in Carnatic music.
Teach compositions of renowned composers like Thyagaraja, Dikshitar, and Shyama Sastri.
Explore different ragas and talas through the learning of Kritis.
Theory and Musicology:
Teach the theoretical aspects of Carnatic music, including notation, scales, and rhythmic notation.
