About Dylan
My name is Dylan, and I'm a professional aerospace engineer specializing in spacecraft trajectory design and orbital mechanics.
I earned my PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, where my research focused on spacecraft trajectory optimization. Since then, I've worked full-time in the space industry supporting flight dynamics, mission planning, and trajectory design for real missions — including work connected to NASA's lunar exploration programs. Before that, I interned at NASA Ames Research Center and completed the JPL Planetary Science Summer School, where I helped design a proposal for a planetary science mission. My research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, presented at conferences, and I hold the highest level of certification in STK, the industry-standard mission analysis software.
Teaching has been part of my career from the beginning. I served as the instructor for a university Kinematics and Dynamics course, and I've spent years mentoring students from middle school through undergraduate as part of Hawai'i's STEM pathway programs, tutoring orbital mechanics, physics, and dynamics. I've seen firsthand that any student can master this material when it's explained clearly, patiently, and with examples that make it real.
When you work with me, you're learning from someone who uses these concepts professionally every day — and who genuinely enjoys helping students reach that moment when a difficult idea finally clicks. I take my students' goals seriously, come to every lesson prepared, and hold myself to the same standard of professionalism I bring to my engineering work.

My approach to teaching is simple: physics and dynamics make sense when you can see why they matter. I use real spacecraft missions and problems from my own work as a trajectory designer to ground abstract concepts in something tangible. When a student understands that the same equations governing a block on an incline also guide a spacecraft to the Moon, the material stops being a list of formulas to memorize and starts being a tool they can actually use.
My method. I start every new student with a short diagnostic conversation — not a test, just working a problem or two together so I can see how they think and where the gaps actually are. Gaps in physics are almost always gaps in earlier fundamentals, so we fix the foundation first. From there, my lessons follow a consistent rhythm: I explain a concept intuitively before introducing any math, we work an example together, then the student works one while I ask guiding questions instead of giving answers. The goal is always that the student can solve the next problem without me.
A typical lesson (60 minutes). We spend the first 5–10 minutes reviewing the previous session and any homework questions. The middle 40 minutes is the core concept: intuition first, then the mathematics, then guided problem-solving with the student doing progressively more of the work. The last 10 minutes we summarize what was learned, connect it to what's coming next, and I assign a small set of targeted practice problems — quality over quantity.
What sets me apart. I hold a PhD in Mechanical Engineering focused on spacecraft trajectory optimization, and I've taught Kinematics and Dynamics at the university level as a course instructor. I've also spent years mentoring students from middle school through undergraduate through Hawai'i's STEM pathway programs, so I know how to meet students where they are — whether that's a high schooler struggling with free-body diagrams or a graduate student preparing for qualifying exams in optimal control. Few tutors can support a student from their first physics class all the way through graduate-level orbital mechanics.
Who my lessons are for:
High school students in physics (regular, honors, AP Physics 1/2/C) and math through calculus.
Undergraduate engineering students in statics, dynamics, kinematics, controls, and orbital mechanics.
Graduate students in astrodynamics, optimal control, and spacecraft guidance, navigation, and control.
Professionals looking to build or refresh skills in orbital mechanics and mission design.
Whatever the level, my goal is the same: not just better grades, but genuine confidence with the material.
