About Tom

I'm a Scottish English teacher and private tutor with 13 years of experience living and working internationally. I began my teaching career in the Czech Republic before moving to Moscow, where I worked in international schools and gradually moved into private tutoring. I now live in Cyprus and teach students both in person and online.
Outside teaching, I have a wide range of interests. Sport is a big part of my life and I enjoy football, tennis, padel, skiing, and rugby. I'm also a musician and play piano and bass guitar, having previously played in bands and musical theatre productions. I enjoy travel, history, film, theatre and discovering new places and cultures.
What I enjoy most about teaching is getting to know people. I've taught some of my students for many years and have watched them grow from children into young adults, which has been one of the most rewarding parts of my career. I try to create a relaxed atmosphere where students aren't afraid to make mistakes, have a laugh and actually enjoy speaking English.

About the lesson

My lessons are personalised, practical and designed around the individual student. I’ve been teaching English for 13 years and believe students learn best when lessons are engaging, relaxed and relevant to their own interests and goals.
Rather than relying heavily on textbooks, I create my own materials and use conversation, games, stories, real-life situations and creative activities to practise English naturally. With younger students, I often build lessons around their interests — whether that’s football, gaming, travel or something completely different. With adults, I focus on useful, natural English that they can confidently use in everyday life.
I also have extensive experience with grammar, exam preparation, writing and academic English, so lessons can be structured around a specific goal when required.
Lessons are usually 45–60 minutes and are suitable for children, teenagers and adults, from beginner to advanced level. My aim is always the same: to make students feel comfortable speaking English, build their confidence and make lessons something they actually look forward to.
