About Heather

I am a passionate and experienced ESOL teacher with over 20 years’ experience supporting adults and young people from a wide range of backgrounds, including refugees, asylum seekers and learners with additional needs. I am motivated by a strong belief in the power of education to transform lives, build confidence and open up opportunities for work, study and fuller participation in the community. I enjoy creating a supportive, inclusive learning environment where students feel valued and empowered to develop their language skills and achieve their personal goals. Teaching allows me to combine my love of language, people and community development, and I am particularly driven by helping learners overcome barriers and realise their potential.

About the lesson

I use a learner-centred, communicative approach that focuses on building confidence and practical language skills for real-life situations. Lessons are structured but flexible, combining speaking, listening, reading and writing with clear objectives and plenty of opportunities for interaction. I use a range of techniques including guided discussion, role-play, visual supports, differentiated tasks and formative assessment to ensure all learners can progress at their own pace. A typical lesson lasts between 60 and 90 minutes, allowing time for warm-up, presentation of new language, supported practice and consolidation.
I am a qualified ESOL teacher and manager with over 20 years’ experience teaching adults and young people from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, including refugees, asylum seekers and learners with additional needs. I have extensive experience in curriculum design, assessment, exam preparation and quality assurance, as well as supporting learners’ wellbeing and progression. My lessons are suitable for beginner to advanced ESOL learners, generally aged 16+, and can be tailored for individuals or small groups depending on their goals, whether for everyday communication, employment, study or integration into the community.
