About Dr Anneke

Hallo! I'm Anneke, a native German speaker and qualified teacher based in Devon, but teaching online. I hold a PhD in Education; I'm bilingual in German and English; and I've been tutoring German privately for over 20 years—working with teenagers, university students and adults at every level.

Whether you're preparing for GCSE or A-level exams, studying German at university, or picking up the language later in life for travel, work or pure curiosity, I'd love to help you get there.

My teaching adapts to you. Sometimes that means structured grammar work. Sometimes it's conversation practice, close reading, or project-based learning. What stays constant is that your goals shape the sessions, and I meet you wherever you are.

I've spent more than a decade teaching and developing courses online, so remote lessons feel completely natural to me. And because I also work as a journalist and writer, I bring a real feel for how language works—the rhythms, the nuances, the moments where German does something English simply can't.

What I love about one-to-one tuition is that it lets me build a genuine relationship with each learner. That trust is what makes it possible to teach in a way that's truly tailored to how you think, learn and grow.

Qualifications:

—PGCE in Secondary Education with Qualified Teacher Status, University of Exeter
—MA in Religious Studies (Distinction), University of Chester
—BA (Hons) in Humanities with Philosophy (First), The Open University

I also spent some time working in the British school system and conducted doctoral-level research on education in English schools. During this time, I co-authored a student textbook and a CPD handbook for teachers and teacher educators.

About the lesson

So, what would a German lesson with me actually look like?

That depends entirely on you. Every learner is different, and I always start by finding out where you are, where you want to go, and what kind of learning feels right for you. From there, we build a plan together.

Here's what I can help you with:

—Grammar and literacy: from the basics through to advanced sentence structure
—Reading and listening comprehension: using real-world texts, podcasts, news and film
—Conversation and speaking confidence: building fluency at your own pace
—Writing skills: from short exercises to extended academic or professional writing
—Exam preparation: GCSE (AQA, Edexcel, OCR), A-level, IB, and university assessments

If you're an adult learner, you're especially welcome. Maybe you studied German years ago and want to pick it up again. Maybe you need it for work, or you're planning to spend time in a German-speaking country. Whatever your reason, I'll make sure the lessons feel relevant and enjoyable.

As a personal learning coach, I also help students develop study and research skills they can carry into every subject—and every stage of life.
