About Olivia

I hold an undergraduate degree in History from the University of Edinburgh and a MSc in Social Research. I have been teaching Mandarin to both adults and children since 2014, helping learners of all ages achieve their language goals.

My journey in Mandarin teaching began in high school, I went to an IB International school and assisted friends and classmates struggling with their HSK exams. I then became more interested in vocabulary development, accent reduction, and listening comprehension. Having played the piano since I was 4, I *secretly* believe that listening is the first step to language learning, it helps with speaking much more than we think! Over the years, I have honed my teaching methods to create a supportive and effective learning environment tailored to each student's unique needs, including those with learning difficulties.

Whether you're a beginner looking to start your Mandarin journey or an advanced learner aiming to refine your skills, I am dedicated to providing personalized lessons that make learning engaging and enjoyable. I understand that each learner is unique, and I strive to adapt my teaching strategies to accommodate different learning styles and challenges.

About the lesson

I believe in student-centered learning. That being said, it is important to understand what you'd like to achieve through our lessons. Some students prefer to use textbooks designed for the HSK exams, while others simply want to improve their speaking or reading skills.

- Lesson Structure
In most cases, I begin each lesson by addressing any questions you have regarding your homework (if applicable). This is followed by a quiz covering the material we learned in the previous class to reinforce your understanding. Next, we focus on your study plan, engaging in Q&A sessions and exploring more extensive topics such as Chinese culture, heritage, cuisine, and more. At the end of our lesson, I will assign homework to help you practice, and you'll have some extra time to ask any additional questions you may have.
