About Waruni Sawindi

Hello! My name is Waruni, and I am a native Sinhala speaker from Sri Lanka, currently living in London after completing my university degree here in the UK.

Back in Sri Lanka, I deeply studied the Sinhala language and Sinhala literature. As an extra dimension to my studies, I also extensively learned Buddhist culture, philosophy, and history. Because of this background, I don't just teach words - I understand the intricate grammar, rich history, and deep cultural traditions behind the language.

Whether you want to master casual, everyday spoken Sinhala to connect with loved ones, or you want your child to learn formal Sinhala literature, reading, writing, and cultural heritage, I have the academic foundation to guide you smoothly. I am a patient, approachable, and encouraging tutor who loves sharing my roots. I look forward to helping you reach your language goals!

About the lesson

Learning a new language should be engaging and practical! Sinhala is a beautiful language, but it has a unique twist: the spoken style and the written style use different grammar and vocabulary. Because of this, I completely tailor my approach to what you want to achieve:

Spoken-Only Track (Recommended for Beginners): If your goal is to speak with family, partners, or travel, we can bypass the complex alphabet completely. We will focus purely on conversational Sinhala using English script (Singlish) so you can start speaking from day one without getting bogged down by the letters.

Reading & Writing Track: For children or students who explicitly want to master the Sinhala script (Akuru), we will learn the alphabet and the formal writing style step-by-step using fun, interactive exercises.

Advanced Learners: If you already know basic Sinhala, we can work on bridging the gap between your spoken skills and formal, grammatical written Sinhala.

I provide custom learning materials and follow-up notes after every session so you can track your progress easily!

Lesson Locations & Travel Guidelines:

Nearby Public/Neutral Spaces: Lessons can be held in a quiet, public environment near Victoria Station. Great options include the Victoria Library on Buckingham Palace Road or a quiet local café.

At Your Location (Within 2-3 miles): I am happy to travel to your home or office if you are located close to Victoria (covering areas like Belgravia, Pimlico, Westminster, Chelsea, and Battersea). A standard £5 travel fee applies to cover local TfL transit.

Long-Distance Travel (Up to 10km): If your location is outside my standard 2-3 mile radius, an additional travel surcharge may apply to cover the extra transit time and higher TfL fares.

Alternatively, we can easily look at meeting at a central public space in Victoria!
