About Izaskun

I'm South African, but I've lived in Spain for the past 11 years — moving between cities, studying, building friendships, and creating a whole life, all in a language I wasn't fully comfortable with at the beginning. There's nothing like not being able to be your funny self because of language obstacles.

But quickly, I learned to actually live in Spanish, not just understand it: making mistakes, adapting, and slowly making it my own.

Today, Spanish isn't just a language I speak — it's part of who I am. At the end of the day, Spanish has shaped a huge part of what I find amusing, culturally significant, flirtatious, and everything in between. That's exactly why I want to teach it: because I know what it feels like to go from translating every sentence in your head to, one day, simply being yourself in another language.

Learning a language is about so much more than memorising grammar — it's a way into an entire culture.

About the lesson

My methodology as a private Spanish tutor

I adapt my methodology to each student's specific objective. Once we've established what you need — whether that's conversational fluency, preparing for a move or life in a Spanish-speaking country, or specialised vocabulary for professional or academic purposes — I tailor every lesson to help you reach it, adjusting pace, materials, and focus as we go.

Teaching techniques and methodology

I use a communicative approach, where oral production and practical comprehension take priority from the very first level, without neglecting a solid, progressive grammatical foundation. I incorporate authentic materials — news, audio, everyday situations — so that learning reflects real, everyday use of the language. Correction is constant but constructive, and I use spaced repetition to consolidate vocabulary and structures over the long term.

Example lesson structure

A standard one-hour session is structured in four phases: (1) a conversational warm-up of around ten minutes to activate the language; (2) introduction or reinforcement of a specific grammar point or topic; (3) guided practice, both oral and written, applying what's been learned; and (4) a wrap-up with personalised feedback and specific tasks to consolidate progress.

What makes me unique as a teacher

I'm a native Spanish speaker with a university degree in Advertising and Public Relations, which brings a particular sensitivity to clear, effective communication in my lessons. I also understand the linguistic difficulties of learning Spanish as an English speaker, because I went through that process myself. That experience gives me a unique perspective on the challenges my students face, and helps me explain things in a way that actually makes sense from an English speaker's point of view.

Who my lessons are aimed at

I teach students of all levels, from complete beginners to advanced speakers. I have a particular interest in students seeking applied conversational Spanish — for travel, relocation, or professional life — as well as those looking for structured, progressive language preparation.
