About Ignacio

I'm a very passionate person who just moved to Sydney. After studying a bachelor's degree related to neuroscience, I started a second bachelor's degree (this one, in philosophy). Once I finished it a few months ago, I decided I wanted to explore the world before starting a PhD, and that's why I came to Sydney.

In Spain, my country, I've been teaching Spanish for years, either as a freelance or as an academy's tutor. One thing I've definitely learnt from all these years is that motivation is an essential factor to improve a language, that's why the lessons should be adapted to the students' aims. So that, if you want to travel to South America, we should talk about traveling, cities, foods, culture, history, etc. But, if you want to be accepted in a Spanish university, we should focus on different things: academic vocabulary, writing, etc. Spanish is the second language of the world (as mother tongue), is spoken in many countries and has a wonderful literature. So, what are you waiting for?

  • Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad, an individual or a certain aspect of the culture?

Yes, Spanish is my mother tongue. I grew up in Seville, in the South of Spain, but I've also lived in other parts of the country. That way, I've been able to realize that sometimes the Spanish language we all speak is a little bit different, depending on the region.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Since we are talking about Spanish language, I would say Don Quijote, of course. Most of the people know this character created by Miguel de Cervantes, even those that have never read the book. But Miguel de Cervantes is more than that! Take a look to his "Novelas ejemplares" and his plays.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?

Yes, of course. In my city, Seville, we say "mi alma" (actually, the pronunciation is "mi arma"), meaning "my soul", when talking to someone we love. But be careful, sometimes it is full of irony.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Because it's the one I use with my family and friends. Also, it's the second language of the world (as mother tongue), and it's spoken all around the world (Europe, America, some places in Africa…).
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

If you want to have fluent conversations, I found specially important to know enough vocabulary and the main forms of the verbs. But don't worry! I'll be there with my notebook writing, for example, the vocabulary you can't remember or the mistakes made while conjugating. That way, you can study at home to improve quickly.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I have a lot of good memories related to one of my teachers: he used to bring a poem and asked us to analyze it. I remember how we the students started to say simple things and at some point one of the students said something interesting, like a development of one metaphor, and then the rest of the class followed him.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

It helped me in many ways, but if I have to choose one, I would say that traveling allowed me to meet some people from Hispanic America, which gave me the opportunity to learn more about the slang or specific words that other Spanish speakers use in Hispanic America.
