About Sophie

I’ve always loved science, especially chemistry. It’s one of those subjects that can feel really confusing at first, but once it clicks it actually becomes pretty fun.

I completed a Bachelor of Science majoring in Chemistry and I’m currently finishing my Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary Science and Chemistry). So teaching science is literally what I’m training to do.

Along the way I’ve worked in a few different roles that shaped how I work with students. I worked in a vaccine production lab at Zoetis, spent time as a teacher aide supporting students in the classroom, and worked overseas in London as a live-in nanny. All of those experiences taught me patience, communication, and how to connect with young people.

I know science can sometimes feel intimidating, especially at NCEA level. My goal is to make it feel manageable, clear, and maybe even enjoyable. I’m a big believer that most students struggle with science not because they can’t do it, but because no one has explained it in a way that works for them yet.

If you’re looking for someone who’s approachable, encouraging, and genuinely excited about science, I’d love to help!

About the lesson

My lessons are relaxed, supportive, and focused on helping students really understand the material rather than just memorizing it. I like to break concepts down step by step and explain things in different ways until they click. A lot of the time students already know more than they think, they just need someone to guide them through it and build their confidence.

For science and chemistry, I focus on understanding the “why” behind concepts so students can apply their knowledge in exams. We usually work through examples together, practice questions, and any homework or topics they’re struggling with. I also help with exam preparation and study strategies.

Lessons are usually 60 minutes, but I can adjust depending on what works best for the student.

I have a Bachelor of Science majoring in Chemistry and I’m currently completing my Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary Science and Chemistry). I’ve also worked as a teacher aide, so I have experience supporting students with different learning styles.

I mainly tutor NCEA Science and Chemistry (Levels 1–3), but I’m also happy to help younger students with general science or intermediate math.
