About Molly
My philosophy is that a good teacher not only instills content knowledge but also teaches their students to teach themselves. This is in part because even if you have a confusing professor, vague advisor, or discombobulated attending, you need to have control over your education and training. I promise, you'll be surprised by how straightforward it is.
Generally, I operate under the assumption that "it takes all walks" when it comes to science and medicine. We learn through trial-and-error, and that's how science and medicine are.
So, just because a student is struggling to learn in a class/lecture setting, doesn't mean they can't learn and master the material.
For a little bit about me, I'm a neuroscientist and actually full-disclosure, pretty young since I'm just out of my postdoctoral fellow training (basically Ph.D. residency if you don't know). My Ph.D. thesis was in the cellular and molecular mechanisms of neurodevelopment and autism spectrum disorders (rodent models; human brain tissues). In my postdoc training, I studied inflammatory-neuroplasticity mechanisms of chronic pain. Think cytokines and neurons. I worked with post-mortem spinal cord and dorsal root ganglion tissues recovered from organ donors. I designed/conducted both fixed histological analyses and treatment assays to test potential therapeutic targets in living human explant tissues. Pretty much all my biochemical approaches hinged on me knowing neuroanatomy/organization. Also, I got to know a lot of surgeons. You guys are awesome! (Paper coming soon! Clinical trials starting soon!)
After all that, you might be wondering why I'm tutoring and not taking over some industry. Well, ironically, I injured my saphenous nerve and am still regaining function. Nerve regrowth is slow. However, I'm as energetic and driven as ever, and clearly, I love biology, neuroscience, and teaching. I also now have the opportunity to direct my full focus to teaching/ tutoring for a decently long time again. As they say, use it or lose it.
Ultimately, given my teaching experience and how much I enjoy the process, I want to help the next generation establish their career tracks.
Please, do not hesitate to reach out to me!

Teaching/Tutoring Approach:
First, I don’t believe in "one-size-fits-all" (or even “some-sizes-fit-all”). I know from experience that, sometimes, teaching needs to be done the student's way. My overall approach for content is guided deduction or problem solving. It gets you to the answer faster while developing independent thinking and self-learning.
1. My approach is always personalized to my student(s), including utilizing different learning modalities.
2. For one-on-one preferred, I employ a discussion/question-driven teaching-style in a low stakes environment.
3. For group-learning preferred, I perform an active advising role in guided teamwork-based problem solving.
Sessions/Lessons:
I use an objective-driven plan based on your specific course and challenges. It could be preclinical neuroanatomy pains or just a really awful biochem professor. Depending on the scope of the content/skills, I design sessions to send you off with a study plan and/or strategy that we can optimize.
We can discuss timing, length, and frequency and/or timeframes for DM-based supplemental help.
Degree Level and Academic Content:
1. Undergrad to Grad- Fundamental principles and advanced concepts in biological sciences (cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, anatomy and physiology, neuroscience)
2. MCAT or Grad- Building critical thinking (problem solving, focused scientific literature analysis, approaching experimental design)
3. MD Preclinical or Grad- neuroanatomy/ histology, systems neuroscience, synaptic neurobiology, neurodevelopment, behavioral genetics, and disorders or disease/injury-induced states
To be straightforward, what sets me apart as a tutor is that I...
1. Have 6 years of higher ED teaching experience (assistant, instructor, one-on-one)
2. Obtained my Ph.D. in neurobiology and am fresh out of my Postdoctoral fellowship (Chronic pain pathology)
3. For undergraduates, I also taught and developed an MCAT-focused course for university students that focuses on critical thinking prep. Results are panning out so far.
For grad and/or MD preclinical, my fields of expertise are (as I’m told) challenging (e.g., pretty rare specialty in human neuroanatomy/histology from organ donor explant studies).
Note, professional/expert-level concepts and current models (rodent and human) in neuroscience and neurology. Detailed knowledge: neuroanatomy/ histology, systems neuroscience, synaptic neurobiology, neurodevelopment, behavioral genetics, and disorders or disease/injury-induced states.
Finally- Considerations:
1. Neurodivergent individuals pursuing higher ED may find me a useful supplement to their current learning plan.
2. Academic 'therapy' lol for Grad/Ph.D.- Approaches for scientific writing (in postdoc, my peer reviewers loved my writing, so I can spread my grammar knowledge/strategy).

Molly Mitchell is an exceptional mentor and educator. Over three years, she served as my mentor while I worked as a research assistant, and Molly's guidance and support were instrumental in helping me achieve my goals. Throughout our time together, Molly consistently demonstrated her ability to adapt her teaching methods to suit my learning style, ensuring that I fully grasped complex concepts and achieved progress in my academic journey. One of Molly's greatest strengths is her adeptness at simplifying intricate ideas and tailoring her explanations to suit her students' needs. For instance, during my RNAscope experiment mapping out DRD1 distribution in spinal cord regions, I struggled to conceptualize DRD1's potential role in descending modulation and connect it to spinal cord anatomy. However, Molly patiently broke down the concepts and restructured her teaching style to provide a clear understanding of axon tracts, guiding me to answer my questions and make connections between neuronal types and DRD1 expression. Molly has fostered an inclusive and supportive environment where I felt comfortable expressing my thoughts, concerns, and questions without fear of judgment. Her approach involved active listening, open-mindedness, and treating me with respect and empathy. Molly's mentorship has had lasting impacts on my academic and personal development. Her guidance not only helped me succeed in specific projects but also enhanced my critical thinking skills, increased my confidence in tackling challenging tasks independently, and supported me in pursuing a career in neuroscience research. I highly recommend Molly as a mentor; she consistently goes above and beyond to ensure the success of her students.
