I run 1 hour GCSE Maths (OCR/Edexcel/WJEC/AQA) lessons for any age focusing mainly around the grade 6 to 9 but ready to teach at any grade range.
My qualifications at A-level are A*AB for Mathematics, Further Mathematics, and Physics.
Mathematics is just a series of very simple observations, it only becomes difficult when you try learning a concept without fully grasping the fundamental observations which come before it. This is why Maths tutors should focus on making sure the fundamental understanding of the basic concepts is strong as it'll lead to the complicated problems becoming intuitive.
I also live by the metal rod philosophy, if you try to force a metal rod to bend, it'll snap; to bend it you need to do it slowly under the correct conditions. Learning is the same, putting students under too much pressure will slow down their learning and risk burnout so it's important to keep students working at a pace in which they are learning most efficiently.
My goal in every lesson is to give my student(s) the skills and understanding of a topic so that they are ready to solve any question even if it's in a style they don't recognise [because in a real exam you can't be certain the question you have to solve will be in the same style you practised].
