About Tom

Hey! I'm an international student from South Korea studying Computer Science at Northwestern University. I'm returning after two years serving in the ROK Army, and it's great to be back... Although I'm in STEM, my greatest strength has always been, and still is, my knack for language. I also speak Korean and un poco Español. I love to make digital art, work out, read hard sci-fi and philosophical fiction, and watch horror movies (though I'm really bad at watching them, haha). If there's one thing I learned from my time in high school and college, it's that for every goal we achieve there's always the day after, the next step. That's the biggest thing I want to leave with students, to push them to think about not just that one exam next week or college prep, but the bigger picture. What sort of life do you want to lead, what kind of person do you want to become, and what can you do right now to begin down that path? Looking forward to meeting you all!

About the lesson

As a younger tutor, I always approach my students not just as a teacher but also as an older friend providing advice and mentorship. I'm not here just to boost scores and grades, but also to build a strong general foundation. A tutor has the potential to be a powerful role model, and I take that responsibility very seriously. I relate to the struggles and pressure of performing in high school and applying to college, and provide key insights and tips from my own struggles and successes. My lessons involve a mix of vocabulary prioritizing deeper learning over rote memorization, solving practice tests, and studying and analyzing real-world media. I am most comfortable teaching high school-level English, but have also taught English for elementary and middle-schoolers.
