About Madalena
I am a recent graduate from Northwestern University with a degree in theater, but I have been studying music since I was 10 years old. I love playing the guitar and writing songs: some of my favorite bands/musicians include Joni Mitchell and Fleetwood Mac! However, I am always a fan of learning new music and would love to let my students guide what kind of music they want to learn how to play. For over a year, I have been teaching music, math, ukulele, theater and guitar to students in Chicago and Los Angeles (where I am now located). I believe that all these disciplines intersect and I love to bring aspects of writing and theater into my music lessons- if that is something that the students are interested in! I love games and believe that learning music should be fun! My guitar is my life-long companion- when I moved to the United States from Portugal during COVID, it was the only thing I brought with me. I want to share that gift with others. Join me if that sounds interesting!

I like to divide my lessons into three parts: revision, challenge, and games. I start by revising concepts from the previous lesson to ensure retention, then move to a new technique, and finally end with a music game (usually related to ear training and sheet music reading). With younger students, I love incorporating fun into every aspect of the learning process! I believe in celebrating every small step: for my 5-year-old ukulele students, I created a boardgame in which they moved forward by playing songs instead of rolling dice and it was a great way to encourage repetition and practice.
I believe that my creativity when creating lesson plans and my ability to meet students where they are at is what sets me apart. I love music and am grateful for what it has added to my life- I love sharing that with others.
I excel and have most experience with children (5-14years old) but I can teach up to intermediate guitar and ukulele. I am also confident in music games for children, and have musical theatre experience to teach singing.
