About Christine

For the past four years, I have been engaged in one-on-one ESL tutoring of business professionals, helping them expand their knowledge of formal business English and American idioms, improve their fluency and pronunciation of standard American English, and adapt their writing skills to match formal and informal American style. During the same period, I spent eighteen months teaching classes of 20 or more at Zoni Language Center in Flushing, N.Y., where the student population was mainly comprised of college-age Chinese exchange students and working-class Hispanic immigrants of various ages. Prior to that, I taught high school English in both public and private school settings for about ten years and did private tutoring as well.
The cultural and academic differences in these groups required me to teach in a multi-level manner and to devise ways to ensure participation and positive reinforcement for all, while creating an inclusive, respectful, and enjoyable classroom environment.
These varied experiences, combined with my knowledge of the subject, afford me the ability to effectively teach English or English as a second language in any scenario without sacrificing my natural enthusiasm and humor.
I hold a B.A. in English and Secondary Education and an M.A. In English Literature, and I have 20+ years of combined teaching and tutoring experience. Mastery of all aspects of the English language, from punctuation to poetry, enables me to navigate with ease in the realm of teaching English to American students or to speakers of other languages. My greatest strengths are developing students’ understanding and application of basic and advanced grammar and instructing them in writing with clarity, good form, and maximum impact in all types of written communication.
I love working with students one-to-one and watching their self-confidence grow as their skills improve. My goal is to help them achieve their goals and rise to a level at which they no longer need my services.

About the lesson

I customize private lessons to suit the needs of each student, whether the focus is writing, grammar, reading comprehension, or pronunciation and fluency. I have been successful in assisting business professionals prepare presentations and in proofreading / editing journal articles and thesis papers for
academics.
My interests range from baseball and music to business and global affairs, so it is easy for me to find common ground for conversation with students and to teach the skills they require through a topic or subject by which they are inspired. For instance, a student who is excellent in mathematics may feel intimidated by essay writing, so I demystify the writing process by demonstrating the similarity between the structure of an essay and the structure of a geometric proof.
I know my subject well enough to be completely improvisational with students whose personalities thrive in a flexible environment, or to choose the right textbooks and exercises for those who prefer more structured lessons.
