About Allie

My name is Allie Ho! I am a high school senior at Semiahmoo Secondary school in the IB Certificate Programme and the Jazz program. I've worked as a piano teacher since 2016, an overall music teacher since 2018, a math tutor since 2017, an English tutor since 2019, and am offering classes in beginner Spanish as I have had 3 years of study in the subject with conversational fluency.

Aside from teaching, I am a climate activist with Sustainabiliteens Vancouver and Climate Strike Canada, a social media manager for @MyEcoResolution (a campaign by Cara Delevingne and Advaya Initiative), the lead trumpet player in the Semiahmoo Jazz Band 12, President of Semiahmoo Secondary's Environmental Club, Chair of Semiahmoo Secondary's Band Executive, and an avid lover of nature who sails, bikes, hikes, and stargazes.

For post-secondary, I am planning to study in the East Coast of the USA next Fall with the plans of studying International Relations and Environmental Science with goals to bridge the gap between Science and Politics in this world of ever-evolving fake news and political corruption.

There are two ways of approaching my teaching: experiential or academic.

I found that as I was a child, I learned best by doing. What this looks like for your child is less time at the table but more time talking and asking questions. This class might be better for students from the grades of K-5 when they are still wondrous about the world around us and, hopefully, we haven't stomped on their curiosity yet.
This is an all-around class where the student and I question the things around us. Why does a lava lamp have bubbles inside it rise and fall in the shapes that it does? How does a Rubik's Cube work and how do I solve it? What are the constellations in the sky and what do they mean? Where does the sky start? How does a piano make the sounds it does? Why do vibrations create sound? Why do primary colours create secondary colours? (These are all examples of the subjects that I've taught in my previous experience). I might have your child try to solve my Rubik's cube, throw balls in the air, walk outside and look at the stars, hit keys on the piano, or try to blow into my trumpet.

Academic could be for older students grades 5-8 who want to excel at a certain subject like mathematics, English, social studies, art, reading, Photoshop, resume-building, jazz, classical music, piano, trumpet, french horn, or bass. (These are examples of things that I can teach).
How I approach academic classes are from a foundational approach. Rather than teaching new material at first, I try and figure out why a student doesn't fundamentally understand the subject in the first place. Many people do not understand how algebra works because their previous education might have skipped over some essential building blocks. My job is to find the missing piece and to build it up again. I use many tactics like using blocks to model math, physically representing a concept, or questioning why a law in mathematics is a law.
In English, the fastest way to learn is to keep talking, reading, and writing. They are all essential parts to having a well-balanced foundation in the language so the class will mainly consist of talking about various subjects and critiquing their writing. The student will have assigned reading and writing to bring to class. At this age of K-8, I don't focus on spelling at all. If the student reads, they will learn to spell along the way. I for one never worked on spelling but since I read so much as a child, I'd win every spelling test in my class.
