About HB
We are a nonprofit organization that supports vigorous, lifelong practice in the theater, based on a solid foundation of practical training. We set expectations, witness the level of commitment, and amplify the choices developing artists make for and against their own talents, balancing encouragement with demand so each may continue to stretch and grow. HB is open to any person with a serious interest in the theater and its related disciplines. Our students, faculty, and alumni form a vibrant community of actors, playwrights, and directors, active in all aspects of the performing arts.
HB’s approach to training is practical and eclectic, with roots in the European classical tradition. Our instructors are practicing professionals interested in sharing their methods and insights with those seeking to begin or to expand their craft. The celebrated actress Uta Hagen joined Herbert Berghof as his partner at the Studio soon after it began and continued to lead the Studio as master teacher until her death in 2004. Hagen’s internationally celebrated books RESPECT FOR ACTING and A CHALLENGE FOR THE ACTOR are used worldwide and set the standard for the HB approach to acting.
HB Master Teacher Uta Hagen was one of the most renowned and respected acting teachers of the 20th century. She was highly sought-after and influential among those she trained at HB Studio, and quickly adopted the role of master teacher and studio co-lead, beside her partner in love and work, Herbert Berghof. During her time at the acting studio, she authored best-selling acting texts, the seminal RESPECT FOR ACTING and the definitive A CHALLENGE FOR THE ACTOR. Both texts still enjoy worldwide distribution among university students studying drama. Her most substantial contributions to theatre pedagogy were a series of “object exercises” that remain prominent training for acting professionals. In 2001, the documentary UTA HAGEN’S ACTING CLASS features Hagen in a series of master classes on her exercises.
Notable actors that studied under Uta Hagen include Katie Finneran, Liza Minnelli, Whoopi Goldberg, Jack Lemmon, Debbie Allen, F. Murray Abraham, Rita Gardner, Steve McQueen, Amanda Peet, Marlo Thomas, Jerry Stiller, Charles Nelson Reilly, and Hal Holbrook, among many others.

HB offers a progressive sequence of ongoing weekly classes, which meet for 10-week terms four terms a year. Offerings include Acting classes, Voice and Speech classes, Movement classes, Musical Theater classes, Playwriting classes, Directing classes, and acting classes for Young People. Choose one class at a time, or design your own part-time or full-time schedule.
Special seminars and master classes are offered between terms, and a variety of short-term skill-building and professional development workshops are offered throughout the year.
For those seeking a full-time training program, The Uta Hagen Institute at HB Studio offers The Hagen Core Training (one-year conservatory) and The Hagen Summer Intensive (6 weeks).
