About Rafayel
Looking for a chess coach who can make the game clear and enjoyable for your child, or help you understand your own games more deeply?
I'm Rafayel Karamyan, an Arena International Master (AIM), chess coach, and founder of RafEvo Chess Armenia. Based in Yerevan, I have more than 10 years of coaching experience, including several years teaching at European School Armenia.
I founded RafEvo to give every student a thoughtful path forward. Some come to me to learn the rules and discover the joy of chess. Others want to stop repeating the same mistakes, prepare for tournaments, or work toward their next chess category. I listen to their goals, explain ideas patiently, and help them see their own progress.
My experience extends beyond the classroom. I have organized more than 60 chess tournaments in Yerevan, including official qualification events. Watching players compete has shown me where games are won and lost: in careful calculation, practical planning, and the confidence to make a decision under pressure. I bring those lessons into my coaching.
I welcome children, teens and adults at every level. I teach online in English, Russian and Armenian, including Armenian families in Los Angeles and elsewhere. Students in Yerevan can also arrange in-person lessons at my teaching venue.

Every student needs a plan that fits their level. Whether your child is learning the first moves or you are preparing for a tournament, I begin by understanding your goals and looking at how you play.
In a typical online lesson, we review a recent game or position, learn one practical idea, and apply it together on an interactive board. We work on tactics, calculation, opening principles, strategy and endgames. I explain why a move works and help you build a thinking process you can use in your own games. After class, you receive a focused exercise or homework to practise.
For children, I use engaging puzzles and guided games to develop concentration, patience and confidence. For adults and competitive players, we identify recurring mistakes and build a clear path toward stronger tournament play. I can also help with school chess and qualification tournament preparation.
Lessons are available online in English, Russian or Armenian for beginners through advanced players. Armenian families in Los Angeles are welcome to study online in their native language. If you are in Yerevan, in-person lessons at my teaching venue can also be arranged.
