About Corey

I am certified by the Ontario College of Teachers and have classroom experience teaching high school science and math. As part of my certification, I scored 97% on the mathematics content section of the Math Proficiency Test, which assesses the math curriculum expected of Ontario teachers.

I also come to teaching from a non-conventional background: I'm a professional musician, music producer, and music teacher. If math and science feel difficult, or if you've never clicked with "math people," you may find my background an asset. I understand math people, but I also understand where they can be difficult to understand.

About the lesson

I have lesson materials that align with the Ontario curricula for the sciences and mathematics across Grades 9–12. However, tutoring sessions are primarily based around the student's own materials and resources. My role is to be a tutor and help the student understand the material, not reinvent their class.

I prefer to begin by conversing with students and guardians about what they wish to improve upon, both in the short and long term. Having clear goals helps to establish a pathway to success.

Lessons may incorporate recaps of subject material, but with heightened emphasis on clarifying concepts that are unclear in class, and on diagnosing knowledge gaps. Demonstration of material, working together with the student through guidance, and moving towards independent work is a key part of my strategy.

Lessons may also feature strategies in organization for continued effective learning. Some students have confusion with content, while others have confusion of strategy, and my lessons will provide both.
