I am Dr Siyanda Mthembu, a Chemistry Lecturer with a passion for teaching, learning, and helping students achieve their academic goals.

I hold a PhD in Chemistry. My academic and teaching experience includes undergraduate and postgraduate Chemistry, with particular expertise in Organic Chemistry. As both an educator and a researcher, I bring a strong scientific foundation and a practical, problem-solving approach to every lesson.

My approach to teaching is built on understanding, patience, and individual growth. I know that Chemistry can sometimes seem complicated, especially when students encounter unfamiliar concepts, chemical equations, calculations, or reaction mechanisms. My goal is to make these topics easier to understand by breaking them down into manageable steps, explaining the reasoning behind each concept, and connecting theory to practical applications.

I know that every student learns differently. That is why I tailor my lessons to your learning needs, current level of understanding, and academic goals. Whether you need help strengthening your foundations, preparing for an examination, improving your marks, or tackling challenging university-level Chemistry, I will guide you through the material in a structured and supportive learning environment.

My Approach to Private Chemistry Tutoring

I am an Organic Chemistry Lecturer holding a PhD in Chemistry. I am experienced teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students. I am passionate about helping learners develop a deeper understanding of Chemistry, improve their academic performance, and build confidence in their abilities.

My teaching methodology

My tutoring approach is student-centred, interactive, and tailored to each student's individual learning needs. I believe that Chemistry becomes much easier when students understand the fundamental principles behind concepts rather than simply memorising definitions, equations, and reaction mechanisms. I break down complex topics into manageable steps, use practical examples to illustrate abstract concepts, and guide students through problems until they can solve them independently.

What makes me unique as a tutor is the combination of my advanced academic qualifications, university-level teaching experience, and research background in Organic Chemistry. I understand the challenges students face when learning Chemistry, particularly when they need to connect theoretical knowledge with calculations, chemical reactions, mechanisms, and experimental applications. I create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and learning at their own pace.

I offer personalised Chemistry tutoring, including:

First year General Chemistry.
Examination preparation: Revision of key concepts, practice questions, problem-solving techniques, and preparation for tests and examinations.
University-level Chemistry support: Assistance with understanding difficult lecture material, consolidating foundational knowledge, and developing the analytical and problem-solving skills required for tertiary studies.

What to expect from a typical lesson

Every lesson begins by identifying the topic to be covered and assessing the student's understanding of the relevant concepts. I then explain the material step by step, using examples, diagrams, equations, reaction schemes, and worked problems where appropriate. Students are encouraged to participate actively, ask questions, and explain their reasoning.

We progressively move from fundamental principles to more challenging applications. I also use practice questions to identify knowledge gaps and strengthen problem-solving skills. Lessons conclude with a review of the key learning points and recommendations for further practice.

My goal is not simply to help students pass an examination, but to equip them with the knowledge, confidence, and independent learning skills they need to succeed beyond the classroom.
