About Alara

Hello! My name is Alara, and I'm a second-year Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry student at the University of Oxford (St Hilda's College), where I achieved a Distinction in my first-year examinations. Before Oxford, I graduated as Valedictorian from Izmir American Collegiate Institute. I currently study at Oxford as a Reach Oxford Scholar, a fully funded international scholarship recipient.

Beyond my studies, I'm actively involved in Oxford life. This summer, I'm working as a research intern at the Dunn School of Pathology while also developing my own biotechnology startup through Oxford's entrepreneurship ecosystem. Last year, I was a member of the Oxford iGEM synthetic biology team, Director of Marketing for the Oxford University Biotech Society, Junior Appointed Committee Media Officer at the Oxford Union, and a Student Ambassador for St Hilda's College. Outside academics, I enjoy music and play first violin in the Oxford University String Ensemble. These experiences have taught me how to balance demanding academics with research, leadership and extracurricular activities— something I enjoy helping my students achieve as well!

As an international student from Türkiye, I understand both the excitement and the challenges of studying abroad. I navigated the UK university admissions process independently and know how overwhelming it can feel. I'm therefore passionate about helping ambitious students navigate the admissions process with confidence.

I teach Biology, Maths, Biochemistry (and Turkish, if you're interested!) and support students studying the IB, preparing for university or looking to strengthen their academic foundations.

Although I genuinely enjoy subject tutoring, my greatest passion lies in academic coaching and personalised mentoring. I particularly enjoy helping students with IB planning, Oxford and UK university admissions, personal statement feedback, mock interviews, time management, study techniques and long-term academic strategy.

Above all, I love teaching. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a student grow in confidence and achieve goals they once thought were out of reach. My aim is not simply to help you achieve excellent grades, but to become a mentor who supports you in reaching your full academic potential and making informed decisions about your future. Whether you're aiming for a 7 in the IB, preparing for Oxford interviews or simply looking to build confidence in science or mathematics, I'd be delighted to help you along the way!

About the lesson

I believe the best results come from a personalised approach rather than a one-size-fits-all teaching style. Before we begin regular lessons, we'll have an introductory meeting where I'll get to know you, understand your academic background, strengths and areas for improvement and take notes on both your short and long-term goals. Together, we'll create a clear roadmap outlining what you want to achieve and the most effective strategy to get there.

Based on your goals, current level and learning style, I prepare tailored practice materials and lesson plans before every session to ensure our time together is as productive as possible.

For subject tutoring (Biology, Mathematics and Biochemistry), I typically send practice questions or worksheets before each lesson. I'll mark your work in advance so that during our session we can focus on discussing your thought process, correcting misconceptions and tackling more challenging problems instead of simply going through mark schemes. If there is a specific topic you would like me to explain, just let me know beforehand so I can prepare high-quality teaching materials specifically for that lesson.

For students applying to Oxford or Cambridge, I can also run Oxford-style tutorials and mock interviews designed to develop the analytical thinking and scientific discussion skills expected during admissions interviews. I have dedicated Biochemistry interview preparation materials and can provide detailed personal statement feedback and comprehensive guidance throughout the entire UK university application process. Having successfully secured offers from all five of my UCAS choices without external admissions consultants, I understand the application process first-hand. I have also conducted mock interviews for prospective applicants and am experienced in helping students prepare confidently.

For IB students, my focus is not only on mastering subject content but also on developing effective study strategies, time management and exam technique. As a perfect 45/45 IB graduate, I also offer guidance on Internal Assessments (IAs), the Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and overall academic planning. I studied Biology HL, Chemistry HL, Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches HL, English A HL, Economics SL and Turkish Literature SL, achieving 7s in every subject, alongside an A in both TOK and my Biology Extended Essay.

Above all, my goal is to help students become confident, independent learners— not just achieve excellent grades, but develop the skills and mindset needed to succeed at university and beyond.
