About Robyn

I first got into teaching in 2011 whilst studying for my A-levels. My teachers recommended me to students requiring Latin tuition from beginner level up to GCSE, as a way of developing my understanding of the language from a teaching perspective rather than a learning one.

After finishing my degree in 2016, I began tutoring Latin to A Level students.

About the lesson

My tutoring approach is to provide students with a forum in which they can ask the questions and discuss the issues they are not able to confront at school – whether due to a lack of confidence or lack of time to address these problems. I found myself often affected by both factors at school, and was fortunate enough to have an older sibling who studied almost identical subjects to me, giving me the opportunity to ask the crucial questions hindering my development – however small or big. This is particularly important with the study of languages – understanding just one tricky grammar point can be the key to solving other issues which unknowingly derive from this single problem.

I believe that with any subject, and particularly around the time approaching exams, it is vital to revisit the basics to ensure that the student has the fundamental knowledge established. Students can often become lost in revision, feeling pressure to focus on the finer ‘A*’ points and neglecting what was learnt at the start of the course, when the top tier answers require a full knowledge of the subject’s basics. My high school Latin teach expressed this idea well in approaching translations: learning every single word of vocabulary on the prescribed list is indeed important for giving a top grade answer; however, there is very little point in knowing the extensive vocabulary, if you haven’t learnt the grammar first. You will know what the word means, but have no idea what it’s doing in that sentence. This is something I have always carefully considered and employed in my own studies and in helping others with theirs.

I am keen to work closely with students to create a learning scheme tailored to their specific needs, so that we are able to unlock their full potential.
