About Makena
I’m currently studying Graduate-Entry Medicine at the University of Oxford, having graduated from the University of Exeter with First-Class Honours in Medical Sciences.
Before university, I achieved grade 9s in GCSE Biology and Chemistry, followed by grade 7s in IB Higher Level Biology and Chemistry, with an overall IB score of 42/45.
Beyond academics, I’m passionate about sports and the outdoors! I’m a qualified scuba diving instructor and love teaching people to dive. I’m also a keen tennis player and enjoy sailing.
With over 5 years of tutoring experience, I aim to make my lessons friendly, engaging and encouraging, creating an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and building confidence in their abilities. I genuinely enjoy teaching and helping students develop a deeper understanding of science!

I offer Biology and Chemistry tutoring at GCSE and IB (Standard Level and Higher Level), with lessons tailored to each student’s individual needs and learning style.
Lessons typically last 1 hour, although sessions can be extended up to 2 hours if preferred.
I offer both lecture-style lessons for covering syllabus content and highly interactive sessions focused on discussion, problem-solving and active student participation.
My teaching places a strong emphasis on student engagement and genuine understanding. Rather than simply memorising information, I encourage students to ask questions, think critically and develop the confidence to apply their knowledge independently.
Lessons can follow a regular weekly schedule or be arranged flexibly depending on student preferences, including additional sessions for exam preparation and revision.
