About Maria

I'm an Oxford-educated, qualified music teacher with over 13 years' experience teaching in leading secondary schools in the UK and internationally. Throughout my career I've taught students of all ages and abilities, from complete beginners discovering music for the first time to sixth-form students preparing for GCSE, IGCSE and A Level examinations.

My experience includes teaching piano, singing, music theory, composition and classroom music, as well as directing choirs and leading music departments. Most recently I was Head of Performing Arts at an international school, where I led the music and drama department while teaching Cambridge IGCSE and A Level Music.

Alongside teaching, I've worked as an Edexcel A Level Music Examiner, giving me valuable insight into how students are assessed and what distinguishes the highest-scoring work. I hold a Music degree from the University of Oxford and a PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status from the UCL Institute of Education.

Whether you're preparing for an examination, working towards a personal goal or simply learning for enjoyment, I aim to make lessons engaging, challenging and enjoyable while helping every student build confidence and independence.

About the lesson

I understand that each student learns differently, so no two lessons are exactly the same. I want to work with you towards your unique goals to creating lessons that are tailored specifically to you.

For instrumental and vocal lessons, a typical session includes technical development, repertoire, musicianship and practical strategies for effective practice between lessons. For GCSE, IGCSE and A Level students, lessons focus on the areas that will have the greatest impact, whether that's listening skills, composition, performance, music theory or exam technique.

My teaching style is encouraging, structured and practical. I break complex ideas into manageable steps, provide clear feedback and help students develop the confidence to become independent musicians rather than simply preparing them for the next lesson.

I teach:

Piano (beginner to advanced)
Singing and vocal technique
Music Theory, including ABRSM
GCSE, IGCSE and A Level Music
Composition and coursework support
Oxford and Cambridge Music application preparation

Lessons are available for children, teenagers and adults, from complete beginners to advanced students. Whether you're aiming for top exam results, preparing for an audition or rediscovering music later in life, I'll help you develop the skills, confidence and musical understanding to achieve your goals.
