About Sebastian

I am currently studying an MMath in Mathematics at the University of Oxford, after Achieving 4A*s at A-level (in mathematics, further mathematics, computer science, and physics) and 10 grades 9-8 at GCSE. I have always had a passion for mathematics, and with that I also always enjoyed helping others to understand the subject. Even as a child, I would always love to help my friends who were stuck on a certain problem. Tutoring maths was therefore always a clear choice for me. For this reason, I am planning to pursue a career in becoming a professor of mathematics, so that I can continue to teach and research mathematics. My goal as a tutor is to show students that maths can be fun and interesting if it is taught in the right way and shouldn’t be seen as a chore.

About the lesson

My tutorials are always completely based around the student. The student should always have a say with what is going on with 1-1 teaching, and thus my students are always in control of their learning. I typically use the first few lessons to try and gauge which topics the student needs covering, but if the student has specific topics in mind then we can go over that.
It is incredibly important that students have a firm understanding of the foundations of the topics they are studying, or they will struggle to understand topics that follow on from these foundations. Therefore, I will generally each session with the basics of the topic that we are planning to cover in that session, ensuring that the tutee can fully grasp everything new. Then I will gauge where the student is at in the topic and provide questions that fit to the level of the student.
My lessons are generally 1 hour, but can vary from 30 mins to 1 hour 30 mins.
I have been tutoring for around 3 years now, with students from year 7 up to year 12/13, including Oxbridge applicants and A level students. I tutor all students in this ability range.
